Scene of the van and pick up involving 8 people who died in California in head-on collision.
Authorities say eight men were killed in a head-on collision between two vehicles on Friday, February 23, in Madera, California.
California Highway Patrol reports that nine men were involved in the crash, but one passenger survived.
USA Today reports,
At approximately 6:15 a.m. the driver of a black Chevrolet pickup truck crashed into a GMC van carrying eight people after swerving in and out of the two-lane highway in Madera, about 25 miles northwest Fresno, police said. One passenger, seated in the rear of the van, survived the crash and was taken to a local hospital. He is expected to recover from his injuries.
The AP is reporting that only two people in the van were wearing seatbelts. “If they had been wearing their seatbelts, the rear passengers would have probably survived,” CHP Officer Javier Ruvalcaba said.
The men in the van were farmworkers headed to work at the vineyard where they were employed. The vineyard was about five miles away from where the crash happened, the Associated Press reports.
Another van followed closely behind them, driven by the wife of one of the farmers. The CHP reported that she witnessed the crash, according to news reports from Your Central Valley.
CHP says initial investigations suggest the pickup crossed over and collided with the van – killing the driver of the pickup and seven others in the van. When the crash took place, multiple men in the van were not wearing their seatbelts, officers say.
CHP says the wife of one of the victims in the van was following in another van immediately behind and witnessed the crash.
Reports from the Associated Press say a witness told police the pick-up truck was driving erratically.
A witness told police the black pickup truck was swerving in and out of its lane on a two-lane rural highway before crashing head-on with the van, Ruvalcaba said.
“At this point, we don’t know whether alcohol or drugs played a factor,” he said.
The farmworkers were about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the vineyard where they worked as pruners when the crash happened, Ruvalcaba said.
The van was headed to the farming community of Firebaugh, an area known for its vineyards and fields of tomatoes, garlic, asparagus and other vegetables.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is defending his decision to publicize a New York Times reporter’s phone number during a press conference on Thursday.
López Obrador argued that Mexico’s law on the Protection of Personal Data does not apply to him as the president.
The issue began when the Times published a story from Mexico bureau chief Natalie Kitroeff about how American law enforcement had allegedly spent years investigating potential links between drug traffickers and people close to the Mexican president.
Before publishing the article, Kitroeff sent a letter to López Obrador’s spokesperson requesting a comment. The letter contained her phone number.
During his daily press conference on Thursday, López Obrador put the unredacted letter on a large screen and read it out loud — including the number.
The New York Times promptly condemned the president’s actions.

“This is a troubling and unacceptable tactic from a world leader at a time when threats against journalists are on the rise,” the newspaper wrote in a statement posted to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
López Obrador remained unapologetic about his actions on Friday.
The Associated Press reports, “President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that ‘the political and moral authority of the president of Mexico is above that law,’ adding that ‘no law can be above the sublime principle of liberty.’ He also accused U.S. media of acting with ‘arrogance.’”
“He also downplayed the risks to journalists, saying it was ‘an old song that you (reporters) use to discredit our government,’ and suggesting the Times reporter should just ‘change her telephone number,’” the report continued.

An Indiana couple has been arrested and charged with felony child neglect after their six-month-old baby overdosed on fentanyl and methamphetamine.
The infant also had bad diaper rash, pulmonary edema, and a Staph infection.
Nichole Neely, 42, and Owen Miller, 43, each face one count of neglect resulting in the death of a dependent and two counts of neglect where they placed the dependent in a dangerous situation, according to a report from WNDU.
The baby was found unconscious and not breathing after a concerned neighbor called the police on January 18.
The infant was transported to the hospital but was pronounced deceased.
WNDU reports:
In an interview with authorities, Neely told investigators that the child had been lying down in her bedroom with Miller when she went to the kitchen for 10 minutes. When she returned, she claimed the child was limp and not breathing and that they tried to take the child to a neighbor who happened to work in the medical field.
Another neighbor later visited the child’s home, where they found the 6-month-old unresponsive and blue and proceeded to attempt CPR.
Police say that when they arrived at the home, they found trash on the floor, countertops, and table in the kitchen. They also found open containers of moldy foods covered in flies in the kitchen, accompanied by a strong odor of trash and rotting food throughout the home.
Court documents highlight the state of decay the house was in as it was so full of trash that police could only open the door to the bedroom halfway. Police discovered a baby bottle on the bed containing brown liquid with a small fly floating inside.
Miller was overdosing when police arrived and was treated with Narcan.
Two other children, six and eight years old, were also taken to the hospital and treated for fentanyl poisoning.
