Chicago Board of Education Votes Unanimously to Remove Resource Officers from City Schools

Chicago Board of Education voted unanimously to remove school resource officers from Chicago Public Schools.

On Thursday, the Chicago Board of Education voted unanimously to remove school resource officers from Chicago Public Schools (CPS).

Schools will be required to remove uniformed police officers before the next school year starts.

CPS students gathered outside CPS headquarters to rally against keeping officers in schools before the vote.

Former CPS student Essence Jade told WGN, “We are here today again to demand the removal of Student Resource Officers and to demand the investment in Restorative Justice Practices and overall, more sustainable practices that support a better learning environment for the students.”

“We want to get the cops out of the school building so we can get the programs that we need,” added Hyde Park Academy student Makayla Acevedo.

The decision drew criticism from several members of the City Council.

NBC Chicago reports:

“It’s still very important for me to come to speak out against this, I feel, reckless idea,” 38th Ward Ald. Nicholas Sposato said.

Other City Council members argued that the decision should ultimately be left up to individual schools on whether to maintain school resource officers or not.

“Every school doesn’t have to have them, but some schools need them,” 24th Ward Ald. Monique Scott said.

16th Ward Ald. Stephanie Coleman expressed a similar sentiment.

“I plead with this board to give the principals an option to have security resource officers,” Coleman said.

The board says the approximately $10 million budgeted for the officers can now be redirected to programs that have a ‘holistic’ approach to school safety.

Watch:

Retired Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Gene Roy shared on X, “I’d like to point out that I had a number of CPS High Schools in my District. The School Officers were not oppressive figures of intimidation and over-policing. To the contrary, they were volunteers for that assignment and became actively involved in the schools and kids they served and protected. In every school they built relationships with community, students and faculty alike, and actually developed information about gang conflicts that prevented several shootings. In one other school, one of the officers VOLUNTEERED to serve as the football coach while his partner VOLUNTEERED to serve as the wrestling coach.”

“Security is needed in High Schools, no matter what part of the US they’re located in. Magnetometers are critical to violence prevention to keep guns out of schools. But remember, they are only as good as the operators and they must be plugged in to work.”

“And do you really want to entrust the safety and security of your children to an entity that can’t even keep track of laptop computers?”

“Take the politics and progressive posturing out of the School Security Program and focus on the safety of the students and the staff.”

Picking up from my post on another platform regarding the ill-advised decision by the Chicago Board of Education to remove CPD School Resource Officers (School Patrol) from CPS High Schools.

One can only hope it turns out better for students than Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s approach of sending yellow-vested ‘peacekeepers’ to Chicago to respond to potential crime and violence over Memorial Day weekend last year, which saw 53 shootings, including 11 fatalities.

Chinese spy balloon spotted over US airspace in 2023

Here we go again.

The US Military is tracking a high-altitude balloon over Colorado.

The balloon’s origin and purpose is unclear.

CBS reported:

The U.S. is tracking a high-altitude balloon flying over the Western part of the country, U.S. officials told CBS News. Military aircraft have spotted the balloon and determined it is not a threat, but its origin and purpose are still unknown, the officials said.

Sources familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the balloon was drifting east in the jetstream on Friday. Earlier in the day, one official said the balloon was over Colorado. Its presence prompted enough concern that the military sent aircraft to investigate.

Last January the Biden administration knew about the Chinese spy balloon traversing across the continental United States, from Alaska to the Carolinas, but sought to conceal this from the American public.

A newspaper photographer first spotted the balloon over Montana.

The Chinese spy balloon first entered US airspace over Alaska in late January 2023.

The balloon soared over nuclear silos and military installations across the US with Joe Biden’s full approval.

The balloon was eventually shot down over the Atlantic just off the coast of the Carolinas.

According to the Pentagon, the spy balloon carried explosives to self-detonate, was 200 feet tall, and weighed thousands of pounds.

It was recently reported General Milley also knew the spy balloon was collecting data as it flew over the continental US but kept this from the American public.

According to CNN, the Chinese spy balloon used US internet to communicate as is soared over the United States and gathered information.

Mississippi Cop Arrested, Brought to Station in Own Cruiser After Shoplifting Sneakers in Uniform

Mississippi Cop Arrested, Brought to Station in Own Cruiser After Shoplifting Sneakers in Uniform

A Mississippi police officer was arrested and brought to the station in her own police cruiser after getting caught shoplifting sneakers in uniform.

Robin Conner, 33, was on duty earlier this week when she went to a Dicks Sporting Goods in Columbus.

Conner tried on a pair of $140 sneakers, then attempted to leave the store while still wearing them.

Columbus Police Chief Joseph Daughtry told The Dispatch that he responded to the scene himself.

“An employee observed them and detained the officer and called 911,” Daughtry said. “911, knowing it was an officer, called the (shift supervisor) and they notified us. Myself, the assistant chief and the captain over patrol all responded.”

“We’re putting her in jail,” Daughtry said. “It’s embarrassing for the department, but we’re going to treat her like we would anybody else.”

CPD will be handling the case.

“I don’t see there’s any conflict of interest,” Daughtry said. “If it was a major case we would turn it over to another agency, but this is a misdemeanor and it’s pretty much cut and dried.”

The Blaze reports, “Conner was booked into the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center, charged with misdemeanor shoplifting for stealing goods worth less than $1,000, and given a $862 surety bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on April 4.”

Though she was originally placed on administrative leave, but the Columbus City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to fire her.
