HBO’s resident liberal loudmouth Bill Maher thought he’d corner journalist Batya Ungar-Sargon on his show Real Time—and boy, did he pick the wrong fight.

Maher tried to grill Ungar-Sargon over her unapologetic support for President Donald Trump, only to get a masterclass in why the MAGA movement is resonating with Americans fed up with the establishment.

Ungar-Sargon pointed out what Maher and the leftist elites refuse to admit: Trump didn’t just change the Republican Party—he exposed the Democrats as the party of the globalist elite, endless wars, and corporate greed.

  • Trump abandoned the tired old GOP platform of foreign interventions, free trade, and social conservatism and instead built a movement that prioritizes the working class.
  • Unlike the establishment warmongers, Trump is actually fighting to bring an end to America’s endless wars.
  • His economic policies put American workers first by rejecting disastrous free trade deals that gutted U.S. manufacturing.

Perhaps the most devastating moment for Maher was when Ungar-Sargon exposed the real reason why so many blue-collar Americans have shifted to Trump: the Democrats abandoned them.

She laid out the cold, hard truth that Democrats not only shipped American jobs overseas with disastrous free trade policies, but then flooded the country with illegal migrants to compete for the few jobs that remained.

Transcript:

Bill Maher:
Okay, so just like I said, we don’t have time to mess around. I got to go right at you because I’ve known you for a while, and when I first read you, you were a conservative Republican, but not crazy. I read you in… where? Newsweek? Time magazine? I’m not saying you’re crazy now, I was just going to say that. But you went from just leaning right to a Trump supporter, okay? Some place I would never go.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
I mean, the night is young, Bill.

Bill Maher:
It is not ever going to be that young. I’m just wondering what you think now. We’re approaching two months in. I mean, you must have a feeling in your gut—look me in the eye and tell me you don’t—that this is really going badly, and I shouldn’t have thrown my lot in with this team.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
Oh no, I feel the opposite.

Bill Maher:
All right.

Bill Maher:
Tell me why.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
I’m so sorry, though.

Bill Maher:
No, tell me why.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
No, I feel so proud of… I mean, I was never a Republican or a conservative. I was a leftist, and I am still a leftist. I’m just a MAGA leftist now because—

Bill Maher:
That makes no sense.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
Would you like me to explain it to you?

Bill Maher:
Please do. Yes, please.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
When I look at what President Trump ran on and the agenda that he’s enacting right now, he took a Republican Party that was built on social conservatism, foreign interventions and wars, and free trade and free markets. He basically took an ax to all of those. During the campaign, he said—look, he’s pretty pro-gay. That’s pretty obvious. He appointed the highest-ranking openly gay person, Scott Bessent, as our Secretary of Treasury, which is incredible. He sidelined the pro-life wing of his party.

Bill Maher:
He has changed the party for sure.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
Okay, so he believes abortion should be legal for 12 weeks.

Bill Maher:
But free trade—you mentioned?

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
On foreign intervention, he’s anti-war. He’s trying to bring an end to all of these wars, okay?

Bill Maher:
By surrendering, but yes.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
Okay.

Bill Maher:
That is one way to end a war.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
Well, he’s on the other side of another party that is quite pro-war and wants to keep the war going, right?

Bill Maher:
But what about these—

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
Okay, so let me just get to the third point. The third point is that he’s not for free trade. He does not believe in free trade. He looked at our destroyed manufacturing base. He looked at the downwardly mobile working class. He looked at the fact that working-class Americans can no longer afford the American dream. He looked at why that was—which was that there was a handshake agreement between both parties that we should somehow have free trade, which resulted in shipping five million good manufacturing jobs overseas to build up China and Mexico.

Bill Maher:
And some came here.

Batya Ungar-Sargon:
No, what they did was they brought in millions and millions of illegal migrants to compete with the jobs that remained here. And what Donald Trump said was, “We have to stop selling out the working class.” That agenda that he laid out—socially moderate, anti-war, and anti-free trade protectionist—is a leftist agenda.

Bill Maher:
Sam, I will bring you in. I swear to God.
