Germany’s Incoming Chancellor Accuses Trump and Vance of ‘Manufactured Escalation’ Against Zelensky

Germany’s incoming chancellor has accused President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance of a “manufactured escalation” against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office.

Freidrich Merz, whose Christian Democratic Union topped the poll in last Sunday’s federal election, made the remarks during a press conference in the German city of Hamburg on Monday.

“It was not a spontaneous reaction to interventions by Zelenskyy, but obviously a manufactured escalation in this meeting in the Oval Office,” he said of the exchange.

“Europe is now under huge pressure to act quickly.”

Merz must have missed the reports on how Zelensky admitted in a meeting with US Senators before his White House visit that he had decided to torpedo the mineral deal.

Merz owes Trump and Vance an apology!

Asked whether he had any plans to visit the United States, Merz said that he would have to wait until a coalition agreement is signed.

Last week, Merz harshly criticized Trump and Elon Musk and said that the U.S. could no longer be seen as a reliable ally:

My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA’, Mr. Merz said. ‘I never thought I would have to say something like this on a television program.

But after Donald Trump’s statements last week at the latest, it is clear that the Americans, at least this part of the Americans, this administration, are largely indifferent to the fate of Europe.

I am very curious to see how we are heading towards the Nato summit at the end of June, hether we will still be talking about NATO in its current form or whether we will have to establish an independent European defense capability much more quickly.

Merz also raged at Washington over their tacit support for the conservative Alternative for Germany (AFD) party, which won 20 percent of the vote but will be locked out of any coalition agreement because it is accused of being too extreme:

Just look at the recent interventions in the German election campaign by Mr. Elon Musk — that is a unique event. The interventions from Washington were no less dramatic and drastic and ultimately outrageous than the interventions we have seen from Moscow.

I am not sure what the American government’s position on this war will be in the coming weeks and months. My impression over the last few days is that Russia and America are coming together here, over the heads of Ukraine and therefore also over the heads of Europe.
