The left’s obsession with gun control has taken an ironic and hypocritical twist as LGBTQ activists and socialist groups rush to arm themselves, driven by unfounded fears of a supposed dystopian future under a Trump administration.

The Philadelphia Inquirer recently highlighted leftist organizations like the Socialist Rifle Association—a far-left counterpart to the National Rifle Association—and Pink Pistols, both of which have experienced significant increases in membership and firearm acquisitions within their communities.

The left’s newfound interest in firearms stems from apocalyptic fantasies of “concentration camps” and “hate-driven oppression” should Trump return to office.

One individual, identified as “A.” by the Inquirer, epitomizes this contradiction, purchasing a Ruger Security-380 while railing against Republican ads supposedly portraying her as a threat.

“Three months before the election, that’s when the alarm bells started to ring… Minorities that are armed are more difficult to legally oppress,” A said adding she’s ready to fight back “in the event of hate crimes or terrorist attacks.”

Matthew Thompson, a gay man from New Jersey, justified his purchase of a gun by citing fears of being “put in concentration camps.”

“The people I’ve been seeing on the left and the gay people who are out purchasing guns for the first time, it’s all about self-defense and fear,” said Thompson. “We’re not looking to arm up and storm the capital. We just don’t want to be put in concentration camps.”

Madeline Shearman, a self-described trans woman from Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, told The Inquirer that she organizes “2A social groups” to train LGBTQ individuals in gun use.

“There’s definitely a feeling among a lot of LGBT individuals: ‘If I can’t protect myself, who will?’… I feel that way myself,” Shearman said.

More from the news outlet:

It’s difficult to track rises and falls in LGBTQ gun ownership because there are few published studies about the relatively small population, said David Yamane, a professor of sociology at Wake Forest University and author of the book Gun Curious.

But in general, Yamane argues that American gun culture has dramatically shifted in recent years, away from a focus on hunting and recreation and toward a focus on self-defense, the core of what he calls “Gun Culture 2.0.” As the culture has shifted, people who own guns have become far more diverse. He pointed to 2020 as a pivotal year.

“It was a period of tremendous social unrest and social uncertainty. And a large number of people in the United States, under those conditions, look to firearms to reestablish some sense of safety and security,” Yamane said. He added that racial and gender minorities “led the way” in terms of new gun ownership rates in 2020 and afterward.

Yamane also pointed to other political moments that have fueled gun interest in the LGBTQ community. Pink Pistols, which has more than two dozen chapters across the country, was originally founded in 2000 after the writer Jonathan Rauch proposed in a Salon article that “homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry.”

For decades, the left has sought to erode Americans’ Second Amendment rights, pushing for stricter gun control laws under the guise of public safety. Yet, when faced with imagined threats, they conveniently abandon their principles.
