President Trump Slams Kevin McCarthy and House GOP for Debt Ceiling Deal: “One of the Dumbest Political Decisions in Years”
December 30, 2024
In a fiery post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump did not hold back his disdain for the 2023 budget deal brokered between then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Joe Biden.
Calling it “one of the dumbest political decisions in years,” Trump lambasted the decision to raise the debt ceiling, blaming it for the GOP’s current struggles and labeling it a catastrophic failure of leadership.
McCarthy engaged in negotiations with Joe Biden to address the debt ceiling, resulting in legislation passed in May 2023 with a 314-117 vote in the House.
The resulting agreement, known as the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, suspended the debt ceiling until January 2025, allowing the Biden regime to have unlimited borrowing authority until January 1, 2025.
This deal also included provisions to limit non-defense discretionary spending growth to 1% annually and reclaimed unspent COVID-19 relief funds.
Just weeks after Kevin McCarthy gave Joe Biden unlimited borrowing authority in the debt ceiling negotiations, the U.S. government national debt has risen by over one trillion dollars, according to publicly available Treasury Department records.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) eviscerated the debt ceiling deal between then-Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Joe Biden in an X thread.
“Washington is broken. Republicans got outsmarted by a President who can’t find his pants. I’m voting NO on the debt ceiling debacle because playing the DC game isn’t worth selling out our kids and grandkids,” Rep. Mace wrote at the time.
The backlash among Republicans ultimately led to McCarthy’s unprecedented ouster as Speaker in October—a humiliating end to his turbulent tenure.
Trump’s statement reflected the frustration many in the Republican base felt about McCarthy’s failure to stand firm against the Biden regime.
Trump wrote on Truth Social:
“The extension of the Debt Ceiling by a previous Speaker of the House, a good man and a friend of mine, from this past September of the Biden Administration, to June of the Trump Administration, will go down as one of the dumbest political decisions made in years.
There was no reason to do it – NOTHING WAS GAINED, and we got nothing for it – A major reason why that Speakership was lost. It was Biden’s problem, not ours. Now it becomes ours.
I call it “1929” because the Democrats don’t care what our Country may be forced into. In fact, they would prefer “Depression” as long as it hurt the Republican Party.
The Democrats must be forced to take a vote on this treacherous issue NOW, during the Biden Administration, and not in June. They should be blamed for this potential disaster, not the Republicans!”
Trump’s criticism comes amid ongoing debates within the Republican Party regarding fiscal policy and government spending. His recent call for an immediate extension or elimination of the debt ceiling, supported by figures like Elon Musk, was met with resistance and ultimately rejected.
Trump said earlier this month, “A VERY important piece, VITAL to the America First Agenda, was added as well – The date of the very unnecessary Debt Ceiling will be pushed out two years, to January 30, 2027. Now we can Make America Great Again, very quickly, which is what the People gave us a mandate to accomplish.”
Trump added, “Congress must get rid of, or extend out to, perhaps, 2029, the ridiculous Debt Ceiling. Without this, we should never make a deal. Remember, the pressure is on whoever is President.”
Trump also, “If there is going to be a shutdown of government, let it begin now, under the Biden Administration, not after January 20th, under “TRUMP.” This is a Biden problem to solve, but if Republicans can help solve it, they will!”
