Conservative writer and pundit Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist appeared on FOX News this week and talked about Gavin Newsom’s recent strategy of trying to imitate Trump and why that will not work in the 2028 general election.

She also points out that Newsom and other Democrats keep making the same mistake in taking on Trump, not understanding that one of the main reasons Trump is popular is because people like the policies that he is putting in place.

Newsom is particularly vulnerable on policy because of his record in California, which is all going to be examined if he runs for president.

BRIAN KILMEADE, GUEST HOST: Okay, couple of other things. They laughed at him, Gavin, they’re laughing at you. So do dictators hold conventions to showcase the future of the party? Because that’s what Donald Trump is doing. He’s calling for a mini RNC before the midterms.

Let the fun begin. Editor-in-chief of “The Federalist,” Mollie Hemingway joins us now. Mollie, what do you take of the Gavin Newsom meltdown? It seems very theatrical.

MOLLIE HEMINGWAY, FOX NEWS CHANNEL CONTRIBUTOR: It’s very theatrical, but it lacks substance, and that’s kind of the entire problem that Democrats have right now. They look at how Donald Trump has a lot of popular appeal, Gavin Newsom has been trying to copy his communication style. He says that he’s going to be meaner.

He doesn’t realize, and this is a mistake that a lot of people, critics of Trump have made, whether they’re on left and right, that people support Trump because they like the policies that he is pushing, and until Democrats figure out how to deal with that problem, that the policies that they are pushing are considered very toxic by a lot of Americans, they’re not going to have greater electoral success.

KILMEADE: You know, I just want to show you the polls, though, so people will say, well, Gavin Newsom, he’s not going to make any gains. But so far in this latest poll — POLITICO that put out — Newsom on the Democratic side leads Harris 25 to 19; Mayor Pete is 13; AOC is 10; and Walz at the bottom. Can’t believe he’s even up there.

So your thoughts about Newsom? He’s probably saying, wow, the Dems like me. They really like me. So I’m going to keep this up.

HEMINGWAY: Well, the problem is that what it takes to win the Democrat nomination, he’s got down. He really understands that, and he should. He’s the governor of California, which is a place where a lot of the left-wing base exists, but it’s completely the opposite of what you need to have if you want to win a national election.

Newsom is not going to be able to escape his record. The fact that so many people have fled the state of California on his watch speaks for itself.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday said the DOJ will immediately appeal a federal appeals court ruling on Trump’s tariffs.

As reported earlier, The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Friday rejected President Trump’s authority to impose sweeping tariffs in a 7-4 decision.

“The Government appeals a decision of the Court of International Trade setting aside five Executive Orders that imposed tariffs of unlimited duration on nearly all goods from nearly every country in the world, holding that the tariffs were not authorized by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), 50 U.S.C. § 1701 et seq. Because we agree that IEEPA’s grant of presidential authority to “regulate” imports does not authorize the tariffs imposed by the Executive Orders, we affirm,” the Federal Appeals Court said.

In May, The Court of International Trade in New York said President Trump exceeded his authority to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA).

President Trump found there was a national emergency and took action under the law by imposing tariffs.

The judges of the Federal Circuit are interfering with the President’s vital and constitutionally central role in foreign policy.

This decision is wrong and undermines the United States on the world stage. The Justice Department will appeal this decision and continue to fight to restore the president’s lawful authority.

President Trump also responded in a Truth Social post.

“ALL TARIFFS ARE STILL IN EFFECT! Today a Highly Partisan Appeals Court incorrectly said that our Tariffs should be removed, but they know the United States of America will win in the end. If these Tariffs ever went away, it would be a total disaster for the Country. It would make us financially weak, and we have to be strong. The U.S.A. will no longer tolerate enormous Trade Deficits and unfair Tariffs and Non Tariff Trade Barriers imposed by other Countries, friend or foe, that undermine our Manufacturers, Farmers, and everyone else. If allowed to stand, this Decision would literally destroy the United States of America. At the start of this Labor Day weekend, we should all remember that TARIFFS are the best tool to help our Workers, and support Companies that produce great MADE IN AMERICA products. For many years, Tariffs were allowed to be used against us by our uncaring and unwise Politicians. Now, with the help of the United States Supreme Court, we will use them to the benefit of our Nation, and Make America Rich, Strong, and Powerful Again! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump said.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi on Friday fired Elizabeth Baxter, the DOJ official who flipped off a National Guard member earlier this month and then boasted about it to a DOJ security guard.

Elizabeth Baxter worked as a paralegal in the same building as the fired DOJ lawyer who threw a Subway sandwich at a federal agent.

Baxter allegedly said, “F*ck the National Guard” as she gave the guardsman the middle finger.

The fired paralegal then bragged about it to the DOJ security guard.

“You are removed from your position of Paralegal Specialist, GS-0950-11, Environmental Defense Section, Environment and Natural Resources Division, and from the federal service, effective immediately,” Bondi said in a termination letter to Baxter.

The New York Post reported:

Attorney General Pam Bondi fired another Department of Justice paralegal Friday — after the environmental division employee flipped off a National Guard member on her way to work.

Elizabeth Baxter works in the same building as fellow fired paralegal Sean Charles Dunn, who allegedly threw a salami Subway sandwich at a Border Protection officer.

Baxter arrived for work at the DOJ’s “4CON” building in the NoMa district of Washington, DC, at 8.21 a.m. on Aug. 18, and boasted to a DOJ security guard that she had just made the obscene gesture to a guardsman at Metro Center Metro Stop and said, “F–k the National Guard,” according to Bondi.

At 12:18 p.m. the same day, Baxter was observed on DOJ security cameras putting up her middle finger toward the National Guard and saying, “F–k you!”

One week later, on Aug. 25, Baxter arrived at work and again told the DOJ security guard that she hated the National Guard and told them to “F–k off!”
