Two Detroit Police Department officers have been suspended without pay for 30 days after contacting U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) during separate traffic stops, in violation of department policy.

Detroit Police Department Chief Todd Bettison has said his goal is to fire both officers.

The department’s policy prohibits officers from coordinating with federal immigration authorities for enforcement purposes.

The traffic stops in question took place in December and earlier this month.

In the first case, Officer James Corsi contacted Border Patrol during a traffic stop on the city’s west side while investigating a felony warrant.

In the second, Sgt. Denise Wallet called federal agents for translation assistance instead of using the department’s contracted 24-hour translation service.

Both contacts led to the individuals being detained by federal authorities.

Chief Bettison initially suspended the officers with pay and stated his intention to fire them. The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners voted unanimously on Thursday to suspend them without pay for 30 days.

Sgt. Wallet, a 27-year veteran, filed a federal lawsuit against the city challenging her suspension and claiming it violated her constitutional rights. The suit alleges that she contacted Border Patrol only for identification purposes, on her lieutenant’s instruction, and seeks to block further discipline.

Following the board’s decision and the lawsuit, Chief Bettison announced on Friday that he was scrapping his plan to fire the officers, stating that he was satisfied with the suspension, according to a CBS News report.

The statement read as follows:

“Policies are meant to provide structure and limits for officers to protect them and citizens alike. When policies are not followed, whether in this matter or DPD’s no-pursuit policy, it puts the community at risk.

I support the actions of the board as the ultimate discipline for these officers. The Board had the opportunity to review all the video and consider all the facts and circumstances in their decision. The role of the Board is to serve as an oversight body and a check and balance for the police department and I fully respect its role. Therefore, I am satisfied with the Board’s decision and I will not be pursuing termination of these two officers.

This incident should make it clear, however, that as Chief, I will continue to vigorously enforce DPD’s policies.”

OpenAI has acknowledged that employees internally discussed alerting law enforcement months before an 18-year-old transgender woman went on to commit a mass shooting in Canada.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Jesse Van Rootselaar’s interactions with ChatGPT in June included detailed fantasies of gun violence over several days.

The posts were flagged by OpenAI’s automated moderation system and escalated for internal review.

Roughly a dozen employees reportedly debated whether the activity warranted contacting Canadian authorities.

Some staff members viewed the content as potentially signaling real-world harm and urged company leaders to alert law enforcement.

Unfortunately, OpenAI ultimately chose not to notify authorities.

A company spokeswoman said Van Rootselaar’s account was banned but that the activity did not meet the threshold for reporting.

She said law enforcement would have been contacted only if the posts constituted “a credible and imminent risk of serious physical harm to others.”

On February 10th, Van Rootselaar was found dead from what authorities described as a self-inflicted injury at the scene of a mass shooting at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

Eight people were killed, and at least 25 were injured. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police identified Van Rootselaar as the suspect.

OpenAI said it contacted the RCMP after learning of the attack and is now cooperating with investigators.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the Tumbler Ridge tragedy,” the company said in a statement.

Investigators have since examined Van Rootselaar’s broader online footprint.

Social media archives include posts from gun ranges, references to 3D-printed ammunition components, and discussions about firearm-related content online.

Authorities have also confirmed police visited the suspect’s residence over mental-health concerns, during which his firearms were confiscated.

The case highlights the growing pressure facing major technology platforms over how to balance user privacy with public safety when evaluating potentially homicidal intent.

OpenAI insists it routes conversations that express harm to human reviewers and weighs the risk of violence against privacy concerns before contacting law enforcement.

The armed man who was fatally shot after allegedly breaching the secure perimeter of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate early Sunday morning has now been identified by investigators.

The Gateway Pundit reported earlier that early Sunday morning, at approximately 1:30 a.m., an armed individual drove into the secure perimeter of President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

The breach reportedly occurred near the property’s north gate as another vehicle was exiting.

Investigators identified the deceased man as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin from North Carolina, AP reported.

According to U.S. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, Martin had been reported missing by his family several days prior to the incident.

Authorities believe he drove south from North Carolina, acquiring the firearm along the way.

Law enforcement officials state that Martin was armed with a shotgun and carrying a gas canister. He was confronted on the property by two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy.

According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Martin was ordered to drop his equipment.

Authorities state that he put down the gas can but raised the shotgun into a shooting position, at which point the agents and deputy fired their weapons, fatally shooting him.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were not at the resort at the time of the breach; they were at the White House.

Federal authorities, including the FBI, are now working to determine Martin’s motive and compile a psychological profile as part of the active investigation.

At this time, officials say there is no immediate indication that the suspect was previously known to law enforcement, and the motive behind the intrusion remains unknown.

Residents in the surrounding Palm Beach area have been urged to review any available home surveillance footage that may aid investigators in reconstructing the suspect’s movements leading up to the breach.

A U.S. Air Force staff sergeant and his husband have been federally indicted after prosecutors say they orchestrated a years-long scheme to siphon off millions in taxpayer-funded government resources to bankroll a luxury lifestyle complete with high-end vehicles and a seven-figure home in Arizona.

According to a federal grand jury indictment, Staff Sgt. Richard Stefon Ramroop, 35, and his spouse Manuel George Madrid, 32, are facing a 12-count indictment that includes:

• Conspiracy to Commit Theft of Government Property
• Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud
• Wire Fraud
• Money Laundering

Federal authorities allege the couple used Ramroop’s position inside the pharmacy at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson to fraudulently purchase thousands of medical devices using government funds between 2022 and 2025.

Instead of going toward mission-critical defense needs, prosecutors say the equipment was diverted and resold for personal profit, with the illicit proceeds allegedly funneled into accounts controlled by the couple.

In total, the accounts controlled by Ramroop and Madrid received more than $11 million through wire transfers and other deposits from reselling the diverted equipment, while the government itself was left out more than $3 million in losses.

Officials say the money was then used to curate a luxury lifestyle.

“The defendants allegedly stole millions in taxpayer dollars from the U.S. Department of War to bankroll a lavish lifestyle, diverting critical resources away from their intended purpose,” said U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine. “Every dollar taken through fraud is a dollar denied to the mission it was meant to support. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and our federal and local law enforcement partners will hold accountable any individual who profits illegally at the expense of the American people.”

“Military servicemembers hold a unique position in our society, where they are entrusted with large amounts of taxpayer dollars to ensure the defense of our nation,” said IRS-CI Phoenix Field Office Acting Special Agent in Charge Jarom Gregory. “When a servicemember abuses their position for personal gain, it erodes trust in the tax system and harms the very citizens they have sworn an oath to protect. IRS Criminal Investigation will continue to investigate allegations of theft of taxpayer funds and government property, ensuring the integrity of our nation’s tax system.”

“This indictment reflects the outcome of a coordinated effort between AFOSI and our federal counterparts,” said Special Agent Richard Kautz, AFOSI Detachment 217 Commander. “Fraud of this level is not just a financial crime, it undermines public trust, diverts resources, and threatens the integrity of our force. Every dollar lost to fraud is a dollar taken away from the security of our nation.”
