In a visit to Laredo, Texas, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries attempted to rebrand himself as a supporter of “strong, safe, and secure borders.”

The messaging shift was striking, not because border security is controversial, but because it conflicts with years of Democrat resistance to enforcement policies that would meaningfully achieve that goal.

Standing alongside Henry Cuellar, Jeffries emphasized the importance of U.S.–Mexico trade, the renewal of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement, and the economic harm caused by tariffs and ICE enforcement actions at worksites.

Laredo’s mayor highlighted the city’s role as a major port of entry and a central hub in the bilateral commercial relationship.

Jeffries followed with familiar Democrat language about “shared prosperity,” humane enforcement, and the need for stability and certainty.

The rhetorical pivot came when Jeffries declared support for “strong, safe, and secure borders.” That phrase has been a cornerstone of Republican messaging for years, particularly under President Donald Trump, who built his first and second administrations around border enforcement, physical barriers, and expanded deportations.

For much of the Biden administration, Democrat leadership dismissed those policies as excessive, unnecessary, or politically motivated.

Now, facing public frustration over record encounters at the southern border and mounting pressure in swing districts, Democrat leaders appear eager to sound like moderates.

The substance, however, tells a different story. Jeffries criticized ICE for conducting worksite enforcement operations and suggested that agents were targeting “law-abiding immigrant families.”

He called for independent investigations and argued that the Department of Justice could not be trusted to oversee enforcement actions fairly. The mayor echoed opposition to a border wall, stating that the focus should be on “bridges” rather than barriers.

This approach reflects the core tension within the Democrat position. Leaders publicly endorse border security while opposing the very tools required to enforce immigration law at scale.

Worksite enforcement is central to border security. Without interior enforcement, unlawful entry becomes economically sustainable.

The Trump administration recognized that enforcement must extend beyond the border itself to the labor-market incentives that drive illegal crossings in the first place.

Jeffries’ visit to Laredo underscores the political calculus at play. Communities along the border experience the direct impact of federal immigration policy.

Local infrastructure, healthcare systems, and law enforcement agencies have absorbed significant strain during periods of elevated crossings.

Polling consistently shows that a majority of Americans support stronger enforcement measures and oppose policies perceived as permissive. In that context, a message centered on open-ended humanitarian language without enforcement credibility is politically untenable.

The Democrat rebranding effort does not alter the legislative record. Congressional Democrats have repeatedly resisted funding for physical barriers, expanded detention capacity, and broader deportation authority.

When bipartisan border packages have included robust enforcement provisions, progressive factions have pushed back. The result has been a policy environment defined by litigation, executive discretion, and inconsistent law enforcement.

Jeffries is correct that trade between the United States and Mexico remains economically significant. Border security and commercial strength are not mutually exclusive.

In fact, stable trade flows depend on predictable law enforcement and secure transit corridors.

The notion that enforcement itself undermines economic vitality reverses the relationship. The rule of law provides the foundation for durable economic growth.

As the 2026 election cycle approaches, Democrats face a credibility test. Voters can distinguish between a slogan and a structural commitment.

If Democrat leadership genuinely supports strong, safe, and secure borders, that position must extend beyond press conferences into legislative votes that empower enforcement agencies to enforce federal law.

Until that shift occurs, the rebranding effort in South Texas will look less like moderation and more like electoral repositioning.

Woman with a shaved head speaks passionately from a brown chair, wearing a black top and statement necklace, conveying a strong message during a virtual event.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is considering Angela Burton, a 65-year-old activist known for her criticism of Child Protective Services (CPS), to lead the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS).

Burton has described CPS as a form of “slow extractive genocide for black people in America” in a 2023 X post and likened it to “child slavery” in another post from July 2023.

“Leave Black people alone. Your numbers and methods are treasure. Racist garbage in, racist garbage out. We don’t need CPS. CPS is Slow extractive Genocide for Black people in America. We know what you’re up to,” Burton wrote.

Currently, Burton serves on Children’s Rights’ New York Mandated Reporting Working Group, which seeks to narrow mandated reporting laws to reduce what it calls over-surveillance and family separations, particularly affecting Black, Latino, and low-income families.

Burton has also posted on X calling CPS a “grave and imminent threat” to children and families, accusing CPS employees of racism, and advocating for defunding police and the abolition of the “foster care industrial complex.”

“CPS investigations terrorize over a third of all children & OVER HALF (53%) of all BLACK children with invasive, traumatizing, generational documented harm. CPS is a grave and imminent threat to children and families,” Burton wrote in 2024.

Previously, Burton worked as special counsel for interdisciplinary matters in the New York State Office of Court Administration’s Justice Initiatives department, focusing on child welfare and juvenile justice. She claimed in a July 2023 X post that she was fired in 2022 after planning to speak against investigating abuse claims at a government panel.

The ACS oversees investigations into suspected child abuse and manages the city’s foster care system.

Burton is reportedly in the final stages of the interview process for the position.

An investigation by North Carolina authorities into the fire that killed NASCAR star Denny Hamlin’s father has concluded.

On December 28, the home of Dennis and Mary Lou Hamlin caught fire.

As emergency services arrived on the scene, the couple was spotted in the front yard with significant injuries.

Dennis Hamlin, 75, succumbed to his injuries, but his wife, Mary Lou, survived.

Since the fire, Gaston County Emergency Management and Fire Services have been investigating the incident for the past month and have concluded their investigation, ruling the fire “accidental.”

However, the investigation concluded without ever determining what sparked the blaze in the couple’s bedroom.

Per AP:

The North Carolina house fire that killed NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin’s father and injured his mother has been ruled accidental but it’s still unclear what started it.

A report released by Gaston County Emergency Management & Fire Services said the Dec. 28 fire at the two-story home originated in a bedroom, but the “cause of ignition” is “undetermined.”

Otherwise, the investigation determined the fire as accidental, Gaston County spokesperson Adam Gaub wrote in an email Friday.

Hamlin’s parents, Dennis and Mary Lou Hamlin were found outside the home the evening of the fire suffering from catastrophic injuries, officials said. Dennis Hamlin, 75, later died, while his wife survived.

The home, located near Stanley about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Charlotte, was owned by a company that listed Denny Hamlin as its manager, according to government records.

Following the death of his father, Hamlin took to X to write, “Thank you to everyone who has reached out with condolences on my father’s passing.”

He added, “My mother continues to improve, and our family truly appreciates the outpouring of support and the respect for our privacy during this time.”

Despite enduring a personal tragedy, Hamlin was able to get a much-needed smile last Sunday after the car he co-owns with Michael Jordan won the Daytona 500.

Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing, named after Michael Jordan’s basketball number No. 23 and Denny Hamlin’s No. 11, took the checkered flag, marking the biggest win yet for the team’s co-owners.

Close-up portrait of a young woman with brown hair and a subtle smile, showcasing her expressive eyes and natural makeup.

The family of 12-year-old Kylie Smith, brutally murdered in the Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia mass shooting by a transgender lunatic on February 10, has been forced to cancel her funeral due to credible death threats.

The threats appear to stem from the transgender community and its supporters.

The shooting left eight dead and 25 injured.

The shooter, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, a biological male living as a “woman,” died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Smith was a vibrant young girl who loved art, anime, and figure skating, with aspirations to attend art school in Toronto. She was one of six victims killed at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, alongside fellow 12-year-olds Abel Mwansa, Zoey Benoit, and her close friend Ticaria Lampert, 13-year-old Ezekiel Schofield, and 39-year-old teacher Shannda Aviugana-Durand.

The rampage began when Rootselaar killed his own mother and half-brother at home before targeting the school.

Police had visited Van Rootselaar’s home multiple times prior due to mental health issues, and reports reveal the shooter discussed violent scenarios with AI chatbots like ChatGPT.

The death threats against Kylie’s family, and her parents, Lance Younge and Jenny Geary, have surfaced both online and locally, leading the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to investigate.

“The RCMP is aware of threats that have circulated online and within the community and we can confirm that an investigation is under way. A safety plan is in place for the individual(s) and community as the investigation continues,” the RCMP said in a statement.

In a heart-wrenching statement shared via the Tumbler Ridge Chamber of Commerce, Kylie’s father said:

“We are SO SORRY we had to cancel Kylie’s service today. We saw how hard everyone was working on it… From what we are hearing, we are at least the third family of the deceased to be harassed or threatened by people from their past since this awful tragedy took place.”

“We saw how beautiful the space was looking. So many people were working tirelessly to make the most lovely service for our girl. The caterers, the businesses that were closing out of respect, the people who took time off work, we are so sorry. We couldn’t risk any more violence in this amazing town.”

The statement concluded, “Mostly, we are sorry to you Kylie. Our girl. This was supposed to be your day. I promise we will give you the most lovely, beautiful event when the time is right. We love you so much and will do right by you. I promise.”

The RCMP has implemented a safety plan, relocating the family to a secure location, and confirmed that multiple families are facing similar harassment.

Protesters line the streets of Lyon in memory of Quentin Deranque.

Thousands gathered in Lyon on Saturday to demand justice following the murder of 23-year-old conservative Catholic student Quentin Deranque.

Deranque suffered a fatal brain injury after being beaten by Antifa thugs as he was providing informal protection for a protest of the identitarian-feminist Collectif Némésis.

Seven individuals have been charged in connection with the attack, which took place on the margins of a protest targeting far-left MEP Rima Hassan at Sciences Po Lyon.

According to local media, several of the suspects are believed to have ties to the Young Guard Antifa group established in Lyon in 2018 by La France Insoumise (LFI) lawmaker Raphaël Arnault.

Among those charged include Jacques-Elie Favrot, a parliamentary assistant to Arnault, and Adrian Besseyre, who previously worked for the MP.

The case has drawn national attention to the violence of the far-left, who bring violence with them everywhere they go.

Authorities reported that at least 3,200 demonstrators took part in Saturday’s march, held under the banner “Justice for Quentin.”

Chants heard during the rally included “LFI complicit, Antifa murderers” and “Young Guard in prison, free the city of Lyon.”

Other participants carried signs stating, “The far left kills.”

National Rally leader Jordan Bardella advised his party not to participate in the demonstrations.

Additional rallies were reported in Rennes, Brest, Saint-Brieuc, and Châteauroux.

Despite tensions and the presence of counter-protesters, the demonstrations were peaceful and ended without major incident.

Organizers concluded the march by unfurling a banner reading “farewell comrade” and singing “La Marseillaise.”
