Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) urged American voters five weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections to remove the politicians running the war against Iran. After Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate, senior Iranian officials claimed the result as a victory for Iran.

In a Nov. 4 post on X, Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, wrote that “the true winner in this arena was Iran, which transferred the cost of the war into the United States.” That day, Iran’s state news agency, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), published at least seven stories on the results.

In May, Trump accused Iran’s leaders of trying to run out the clock until the midterms. At a May 27 Cabinet meeting, Trump said, “They thought they were going to out wait me, you know. ‘We’ll out wait him. He’s got the midterms.’ I don’t care about the midterms.”

On Sept. 29, the IRGC published a 26-page open letter addressed to “the honorable people of the United States of America.” The letter told Americans to “wake up” and “wrest control back from corrupt politicians.” It also stated, “Remove from power the evil, deceitful and violent politicians who are responsible for America’s current state.” The letter recast the regime’s “Death to America” slogan as “a prayer for the eradication of the diabolical ruling elite whose seat of power is the White House.” A State Department spokesperson called the letter “the Iranian regime’s latest act of desperation.”

On election night, Trump told Fox News, “I think a part of it was Iran,” and attributed the losses mainly to gasoline prices driven up by the war, according to Stars and Stripes. Speaking the next day, Trump said, “You can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”

Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli-Larijani, chairman of the Expediency Council, which settles disputes between Iran’s parliament and its clerical Guardian Council, portrayed Trump’s remarks as an acknowledgment of Iran’s role in the Republican defeat. In a post, he called the result humiliating and said the defeats suffered by U.S. leaders had extended “from the battlefield to the ballot box.”

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, posted on X that Iran had dealt Trump a political defeat in Washington. Rezaei warned that anyone who takes on Iran will pay the price “from the battlefield to their own doorstep.”

Culture Minister Abbas Salehi wrote that young Americans voted against Trump’s “war policies” and the “child-killing actions” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Iran’s embassy in London posted that “now is a good time for Trump and his team to read Barbara Tuchman’s The March of Folly,” alongside an image depicting Trump reading the book.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s chief negotiator with Washington, tied Iran’s position directly to the American vote. “Conscience or the cost of living, Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message,” he posted on X. He added, “If the US govt betrays their public will to serve international paymasters and blackmailers, it will learn our NO comes with a Nightmare.”

In a Nov. 4 letter to colleagues announcing his candidacy for speaker, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries listed among the new majority’s goals for its first 100 days to “stop the reckless war of choice in Iran.”

In Tehran, crowds marked the Nov. 4 anniversary of the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy by burning American and Israeli flags and chanting “Death to America.” Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani told the demonstrators, “The decisive defeat of the United States and the Zionist regime in recent developments and elections is the result of the Iranian nation’s steadfastness and strength.” Hamshahri, a daily newspaper owned by the Tehran municipality, ran a front-page image of Trump blindfolded with his head bowed under the headline “Iran’s Shadow Over the U.S. Elections.” The paper wrote that 47 years after Iranians seized the U.S. Embassy, which it called the “spies’ nest,” Iran’s name again resonates at the heart of American politics.

Even as Iranian officials celebrated the Republican losses, Khamenei warned that the election would do little to change U.S. policy toward Iran. He said anyone expecting a shift was “seriously mistaken,” Al Jazeera reported. Khamenei’s statement predicted that “the stage will be set for an ever-deepening, more rapid decline of the Great Satan’s domination.”
