IT’S OFFICIAL: Nearly 70% of Alaska Voters APPROVE Mandating U.S. Citizenship to Vote — Deliver Stunning Rebuke to RINO Lisa Murkowski After She Opposed SAVE America Act
November 6, 2026
Alaska voters have delivered an overwhelming victory for election integrity, and the results are raising fresh questions for RINO Senator Lisa Murkowski, who spent months opposing President Donald Trump’s SAVE America Act.
In Tuesday’s midterm elections, nearly 70% of Alaska voters supported Ballot Measure 3, an initiative explicitly establishing in state law that only United States citizens may vote in Alaska elections.
According to Ballotpedia’s election results, the measure received 142,616 YES votes, or 69.64%, compared with 62,175 NO votes, or 30.36%, in the reported tally.

The measure amends state statute so that “only a person who is a citizen of the United States” may vote in any election. Existing law already said a person “may” vote who is a U.S. citizen (along with age, residency, and registration requirements). Sponsors said the one-word change closes any ambiguity and makes the citizenship requirement unmistakable.
Former House Speaker Mike Chenault, former Senate Majority Leader John Coghill, and former Sen. Josh Revak sponsored the initiative through Alaskans for Citizen Voting.
In statements after the results, Coghill said, “Alaskans have spoken clearly. The passage of Ballot Measure 3 affirms the importance of citizenship as a fundamental qualification for voting in our elections.”
Chenault called it “common sense” and noted that roughly two dozen cities and jurisdictions elsewhere have authorized some form of noncitizen voting, so Alaska acted proactively rather than waiting for the issue to arrive.
Richard Uihlein, the Illinois shipping executive and major GOP donor, put more than $800,000 into the signature drive and campaign. No organized opposition formed against the measure. The Alaska Department of Law had earlier said the change would not alter existing qualifications to vote.
Legacy outlets quickly labeled the result “largely meaningless” because federal law and prior state law already barred noncitizens from voting. That framing ignores both the national pattern of cities and localities testing noncitizen voting and the straightforward preference of Alaskan voters for explicit language.
The outcome stands in sharp contrast to the position taken by Alaska’s senior Republican senator. Lisa Murkowski repeatedly opposed the federal SAVE America Act, which requires documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and photo identification to cast a ballot.
In a Wall Street Journal op-ed and Senate statements, Murkowski said she supports the goals of citizen-only voting and voter ID but called the bill too burdensome for rural Alaska, citing limited election offices, travel costs for remote communities, and implementation timelines. She was among the small group of Republicans who voted against efforts to advance the legislation.
