Markwayne Mullin Says the 350,000 Haitians and Syrians Under TPS Can Apply For Permanent Residence to Avoid Deportation After Supreme Court Ruling (VIDEO)

Why is Markwayne Mullin encouraging Haitian and Syrian migrants – who were supposed to be in the US “temporarily” – to apply for a permanent visa after the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration is allowed to end their protected status?
DHS Chief Markwayne Mullin on Sunday appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” to discuss the Supreme Court’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for hundreds of thousands of Haitians and Syrians.
The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that the Temporary Protected Status is… temporary!
The three liberal justices Sotomayor, Kagan and Jackson dissented.
The Department of Homeland Security previously said the ‘Temporary Protected Status’ for the Haitian and Syrian migrants will expire July 1.
However, Markwayne Mullin told CNN’s Jake Tapper that the Haitians and Syrians can apply for permanent residence in the US.
“Will you be deporting all of them? Will they all be deported back to their home countries – Haiti and Syrian – and when will these deportations start? Will they be immediately?” Jake Tapper asked Mullin.
“These individuals have a couple of choices: they can try to apply for a for a permanent residence here, they can apply for a temporary visa if they choose to, or they can choose to go back,” Mullin said.
Choose to go back?
Jake Tapper asked Mullin if applying for citizenship or a visa will stop the deportation process.
“Haitians with pending criminal charges, prior felony charges, or are on welfare are generally not eligible for permanent residence, but each case will be looked at individually,” Mullin said.
“If they want to go back, we’ll help them with that. I’m talking directly to the individuals that are with the temporary protected status: either try to fill out the paperwork and be here underneath a permanent status, or we’ll help you get back to your country,” Mullin said.
