In 2022, a young man from South Carolina named Gavin Guffey took his own life after being sextorted. Sextortion is when an online presence extorts someone after obtaining images of them naked or in a sexually compromised position.

The people who do this often prey on young people through social media. A young man might send a very personal photo to someone if they think it is an attractive young woman in their age group. A young woman can fall into the same trap.

The sextorter then demands money or threatens they will publish the materials on the internet. In some cases, the victims would rather face death by their own hands. This is what happened to Gavin Guffey. Guffey’s father is Republican South Carolina State Rep. Brandon Guffey.

The sextorter in this case is a Nigerian man and he is now facing 30 years in federal prison.

Nigerian man to plead guilty in sextortion death of SC lawmaker’s son

A Nigerian man is expected to plead guilty in connection with the sextortion and death of a South Carolina lawmaker’s teenage son in 2022, prosecutors say.

Hassanbunhussein Abolore Lawal is expected to plead guilty to production of child pornography and cyberstalking resulting in death for coercing 17-year-old Gavin Guffey to send him compromising photos and harassing the teen for money before his death by suicide. Prosecutors say Lawal went by the online aliases “Bellajannet28,” “Bellajannet30” and “Aliceconnors66,” among others.

Prosecutors indicted Lawal on federal charges in January 2025. He could spend up to 30 years in prison. He must register as a sex offender upon his release.

Rep. Brandon Guffey, Gavin’s father, introduced legislation in 2022 to crack down on sexual exploitation. Guffey said his son fell victim to someone he thought he could trust. He said the suspect pretended to be a woman at another college on Instagram, stealing photos that had been taken by another device that were used to extort his son for money.

Guffey said the scammers attempted to extort his family in the weeks after his son’s death.

“I mean to go as far as to send me a message less than 30 days after Gavin’s death to say did I tell you your son begged for his life — shows you how evil these people can be,” Guffey said. “There’s no telling how many other kids they have targeted.”

This is the person who did this.
