Trump threatens to retaliate against NATO ‘allies.’

Weak NATO allies may pay a price for failing to help the US.

US President Donald J. Trump has made new threats against NATO ‘allies’ Germany, Italy, and Spain, warning he may soon reduce the American military presence there, as the feud with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Prime Ministers Giorgia Meloni and Pedro Sánchez over the war against Iran.

Associated Press reported:

“Trump made the threat after Merz earlier this week said that the U.S. was being “humiliated” by the Iranian leadership and criticized Washington’s lack of strategy in the war. Trump has also repeatedly railed against NATO for the alliance’s refusal to assist the U.S. in its two-month-old war.

‘The United States is studying and reviewing the possible reduction of Troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time’, Trump said in a social media post.”

The US has several major military facilities in Germany, including the headquarters for European and Africa Command, as well as Ramstein Air Base and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

“On Tuesday, [Trump] wrote: ‘The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!’ Trump added that it was no surprise ‘that Germany is doing so poorly, both economically and in other respects!’”

Reuters reported:

“President Donald Trump on Thursday said “probably” when asked whether he would consider pulling U.S. troops out of Italy and Spain, a day after announcing that Washington was ‌looking at reducing the number of military personnel in Germany.

[…] An internal Pentagon email, reported by Reuters last week, outlined options for the United States to punish NATO allies it believes failed to support U.S. operations in the war with Iran, including suspending Spain from the alliance.”

Asked if he would also consider pulling U.S. troops out of Italy and Spain, Trump said, ‘Probably’. Since ‘Italy has not been of any help to us and Spain has been horrible, absolutely horrible’.

“The U.S. had just over 68,000 active-duty military personnel assigned permanently in its overseas bases in Europe as of December 2025, data from the U.S. Defense Manpower Data Center shows. More than half – about 36,400 – are based in Germany.”
