A handful of violent left-wing thugs attacked federal officials while ‘protesting’ outside the Portland ICE office earlier this month, and one of these leftists is looking at spending potentially most of the rest of her life behind bars.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon announced on Thursday that three rioters had been charged with several crimes, including assaulting federal law enforcement officers. The three defendants made their first appearances in federal court that day before a U.S. Magistrate Judge.

Here are the three individuals, along with their specific alleged crimes.

Julie Winters, 46, of Portland, has been charged by criminal complaint with the felony of attempted assault of a federal officer.

Aziel Chambers, 20, of Merlin, Oregon, has been charged by information with the misdemeanor offenses of assault on a federal officer, creating a hazard on federal property, and failing to obey a lawful order.

Rachel Jean Pope, 28, of Portland, has been charged by information with the misdemeanor offense of assault on a federal officer.

According to court documents and information shared in court, on June 24, 2025, several leftists organized near an ICE office in South Portland. For several weeks, leftist rioters had been trying to damage the building and target federal law enforcement officers with threats of violence, hurling pepper spray, and tossing other objects like rocks, trash, and bricks.

At approximately 11:15 pm, federal officers noticed Winters trying to light what was described as an incendiary device next to the guard shack of the building. Things then escalated when FPS officers engaged her.

Winter responded by pulling out a large knife from her backpack and throwing it at an officer. Fortunately, the officer was not hit.

An officer then used a taser to take down Winters as she attempted to flee, but danger remained. She was able to pull out another large knife from her waistband before another officer finally subdued and arrested her.

Chambers tried to blind a federal officer by striking him in the eye with a laser pointer that same evening. He has also been charged with failing to comply with an officer’s orders to leave the premises on June 17 and throwing an object at federal property on June 20.

Out of the three, Winters faces the most severe punishment. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon notes that felony assault of a federal officer and inflict bodily injury carries a potential 20-year prison sentence.

Pope and Chambers have been released from prison pending future court proceedings, presumably because their alleged crimes are ‘misdemeanors.’ Winters remains in custody.

University of Virginia President James Ryan announced his resignation, amid pressure from the Trump administration to end the school’s diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.

In a letter addressed to the head of the university board on Thursday, Ryan said his resignation would be effective no later than Aug. 15, The New York Times reported.

In another letter, addressed to the university community on Friday, Ryan shared his reasons for stepping down.

“I am writing, with a very heavy heart, to let you know that I have submitted my resignation as President of the University of Virginia,” Ryan said.

“To make a long story short, I am inclined to fight for what I believe in, and I believe deeply in this University. But I cannot make a unilateral decision to fight the federal government in order to save my own job.

“To do so would not only be quixotic but appear selfish and self-centered to the hundreds of employees who would lose their jobs, the researchers who would lose their funding, and the hundreds of students who could lose financial aid or have their visas withheld,” he wrote.

Ryan added that he had already planned on stepping down in 2026 for “entirely separate” reasons.

In an April 28 letter addressed to Ryan, the Department of Justice urged Ryan to take action.

The DOJ had received complaints that the school was not complying with President Donald Trump’s executive orders dismantling discriminatory DEI practices.

“Time is running short, and the department’s patience is wearing thin,” read another DOJ letter dated June 17, signed by Harmeet K. Dhillon, the head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division.

The DOJ later announced it was launching an investigation of the school.

According to another New York Times report published Thursday, the DOJ had also demanded that Ryan step down to help resolve the university’s DEI issue.

It’s notably a public university, which is different as the campaign’s almost exclusively targeted Ivy League schools up until now, according to AP.

Ryan had served as president of the school since 2018, according to the UVA website.

Previously, the Trump administration had almost exclusively targeted Ivy League schools like Harvard and Columbia.

UVA, a public university, marks a shift in the administration’s war on DEI, the Associated Press reported.
