Dezi Bird Freeman, 56, is the subject of a major manhunt in Victoria, Australia, after allegedly killing two police officers and injuring a third during a raid on his property. Born Desmond Christopher Filby, Freeman is a self-proclaimed “sovereign citizen” who rejects government authority and has a long history of clashes with police and courts.

Freeman’s radicalization accelerated during Australia’s draconian Covid lockdowns. He refused to wear masks, rejected vaccinations, and railed against government restrictions, calling police “terrorist thugs” and comparing them to Nazis. While Australian authorities saw this defiance as dangerous, many American conservatives would view such resistance as a reasonable rejection of violations of basic freedoms and rights.

His history with the law is quite colorful. Freeman once attempted to arrest a magistrate in court and joined an effort to charge the state premier with treason, a case that was quickly dismissed.

Court records show repeated driving charges, frequent insults toward judges, and attempts to claim legal immunity as a “sovereign citizen.” Freeman is believed to be an experienced bushman, familiar with local wilderness and caves, complicating the search. Police warn he is “heavily armed” and may have stolen the officers’ guns.

Australian authorities stress that the sovereign citizen movement poses a risk of violence, having gained traction during the country’s Covid lockdowns. But the movement is not unique to Australia. It also exists in the United States.

The U.S. sovereign citizen movement is a loosely organized anti-government ideology that first emerged in the 1970s and has since evolved over several decades. Its adherents believe the federal government is illegitimate and often claim they can declare themselves “sovereign,” placing themselves outside the reach of most federal, state, and local laws.

They typically argue that the “real” Constitution ended with the original 13 amendments, that later amendments such as the 14th or 16th are invalid, or that the federal government operates as a corporation rather than a legitimate authority.

The movement’s roots can be traced to earlier tax protest groups, conspiracy theories about banking and monetary systems, and misinterpretations of admiralty law and the Uniform Commercial Code.

In practice, sovereign citizens frequently engage in what experts call “paper terrorism,” filing frivolous lawsuits, liens, and pseudo-legal documents to harass government officials, law enforcement, and private citizens. Other common tactics include refusing to obtain driver’s licenses or vehicle registrations, creating their own identification papers, refusing to pay taxes, and claiming diplomatic immunity.

Some sovereign citizens have rejected U.S. legal tender and attempted to create their own forms of money or payment systems, reflecting their broader rejection of federal authority and their belief that the current monetary system is illegitimate. They have tried to bypass the use of Federal Reserve notes through various means, including promoting the use of gold and silver coins, arguing that only precious metals constitute “real” money under the Constitution.

Others have advocated direct barter systems as a way to exchange goods and services without relying on official currency. A smaller number have gone further by attempting to issue their own private coins, certificates, or digital currencies, though these efforts have always failed to gain widespread acceptance.

Several notable cases have highlighted this trend. The Liberty Dollar case, led by Bernard von NotHaus, involved the creation of silver coins and warehouse receipts that were marketed as an alternative to Federal Reserve notes. Other incidents have centered on “redemption” schemes, where adherents claimed they could access secret government accounts through complex pseudo-legal financial instruments.

Sovereign citizens often face legal consequences for their actions. Creating or circulating alternative currency can violate federal counterfeiting laws, while refusing to recognize official money frequently leads to tax evasion charges. Under the Constitution, the federal government has exclusive authority over legal tender.

Their rejection of official currency is rooted in the belief that the Federal Reserve system is unconstitutional, that Federal Reserve notes are not “real” money, and that the United States should have remained on the gold standard. Others see paper money itself as illegitimate government control. Although these ideas remain central to the movement, efforts to act on them have consistently ended in criminal charges and failed experiments in alternative currency.

The FBI has identified sovereign citizens as a domestic terrorism threat because some adherents have attacked police during traffic stops or court proceedings. However, most rely on bureaucratic tactics, such as clogging up courts with nuisance filings and counterfeit documents, rather than violence. Courts at every level have repeatedly dismissed their arguments as frivolous, noting that the movement’s theories have no basis in constitutional or statutory law.

Recent cases illustrate the pattern. In May 2025, 33-year-old Devonte Arthur was arrested in Richland County, South Carolina, for driving with a counterfeit license plate typical of sovereign citizen claims. That same month in Richmond, police arrested another self-proclaimed sovereign citizen who led officers on a slow-speed pursuit, refused to recognize their authority, and created a standoff at the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza that ended only after chemical agents were deployed.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 2024 saw six violent incidents involving sovereign citizens targeting local and state law enforcement, leaving one officer dead, three hospitalized with gunshot wounds, and four more injured. None of the attackers survived.

Those who did, wound up in jail. Curtis Gregory Smith Jr. of Middletown, Pennsylvania, convicted and sentenced to 56 years for possessing firearms, body armor, and thousands of rounds of “NATO grade” ammunition, and Wayne R. Lund of Oak Park Heights, Minnesota, who was caught with pipe bombs during a traffic stop, claiming they were for his “rocket hobby.”

Trump’s former National Security Advisor John Bolton transmitted classified emails over a private server system and they were intercepted by a hostile foreign country’s spy service, according to a leak to The New York Times.

As reported last week, John Bolton is reportedly under investigation for violating the Espionage Act, according to The New York Times.

“The investigation into whether John Bolton, President Trump’s former national security adviser, mishandled classified information is trying to determine if he violated certain sections of the Espionage Act, which makes it a crime to illegally retain or transmit national defense information, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss details of the case,” The New York Times reported.

The FBI raided the home of Trump’s former National Security Advisor, John Bolton, last Friday morning.

FBI agents were sent to Bolton’s home because he allegedly sent “highly sensitive” classified materials to family members from a private, unsecured email server while he was working at the White House during the first Trump Administration.

“Investigators reopened a dormant probe into Bolton’s alleged use of a private email to send classified national security documents to his wife and daughter from his work desk before his dismissal by Trump in September 2019, according to a senior US official,” The New York Post reported last week.

The investigation into John Bolton began in 2020 when he used classified information to write his book titled, “The Room Where It Happened.”

The Biden Administration halted the investigation into Bolton, but FBI Director Kash Patel revived it and ordered the raid on the former NatSec Advisor’s home.

John Bolton has not been arrested or charged with any crimes (yet).

The New York Times on Wednesday reported that the US Government actually discovered John Bolton’s classified emails while gathering information from an “adversarial country’s spy service.”

The investigation into President Trump’s former national security advisor, John R. Bolton, began to pick up momentum during the Biden administration, when U.S. intelligence officials collected information that appeared to show that he had mishandled classified information, according to people familiar with the inquiry.

The United States gathered data from an adversarial country’s spy service, including emails with sensitive information that Mr. Bolton, while still working in the first Trump administration, appeared to have sent to people close to him on an unclassified system, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive case that remains open.

The investigation of Mr. Bolton, who has become an ardent critic of the president, burst back into public view last week when federal agents searched his Maryland home and Washington office.

While those searches have raised fresh questions about the extent to which Mr. Trump may be using the Justice Department and F.B.I. to try to punish those he dislikes, the new details of the case present a more complex chain of events. The disclosures suggest that a long-running investigation into Mr. Bolton’s activities changed over time, with some of the issues echoing past inquiries into the handling of national security secrets.

The emails in question, according to the people, were sent by Mr. Bolton and included information that appeared to derive from classified documents he had seen while he was national security adviser Mr. Bolton apparently sent the messages to people close to him who were helping him gather material that he would ultimately use his 2020 memoir, “The Room Where It Happened.”

In the aftermath of the horrific scene at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where a transgender terrorist killed two young children, a fifth-grade student at the Catholic school described to reporters what happened and how his “brave” friend shielded him from gunfire. 

10-year-old Weston Halsne told NBC’s Minneapolis affiliate KARE that his friend was shot in the back and had to go to the hospital. “The shots were like, right next to me,” he said. “My friend Victor, like saved me, though, because he layed on top of me, but he got hit.”

Weston continued, “Um, he’s really brave, and I hope he’s good in the hospital.” He further told everyone who was transported to the hospital, “I hope you’re okay, and I’m praying for you.”

In another interview with Fox, Weston described the shooter as “wearing all black” with a ski mask. “he shot through the stained glass windows, so they’re probably ruined,” he said.

When asked about a mark on his neck, Weston told a reporter, “I don’t even know what it’s from, kind of looks like debris or something.”

As The Gateway Pundit reported, a transgender gunman opened fire, shooting through the windows of the church at Annunciation Catholic School as students attended mass during the first week of the school year.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that the shooter, a male in his early 20s, opened fire on children as they attended mass at the school, killing at least two children and injuring 14 children and three adults. Police say he was armed with three guns: a rifle, a shotgun, and a handgun.

The shooter, who killed himself at the scene, posted a manifesto on YouTube before the shooting, showing his gun collection with scribbled words on the barrel and magazines, including “kill Donald Trump.” The video also showed a body target on his wall with an image of Jesus Christ on the head of the target.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed on Wednesday that the FBI is investigating the shooting as domestic terrorism and a hate crime against Catholics.

Mainstream media and green agenda advocates celebrate the spread of solar in developing countries as proof that fossil fuels can and should be abandoned, presenting it as both an environmental necessity and a path to prosperity. British officials urge investment in a “solar revolution across Africa,” citing projects that combine solar with mobile technology, while the World Economic Forum praises Pakistan’s “solar boom” as a lesson for others.

The reality is less glamorous. Roughly 1.3 billion people worldwide lack access to grid electricity. In countries where corrupt or dysfunctional governments cannot deliver reliable power, people turn to solar out of necessity, not climate concern. Off-grid solar is a survival tool, not a lifestyle choice.

What most households can afford is minimal: a small panel that, after charging all day, might power a single light bulb for a few hours at night or charge a phone. These systems cannot handle laptops, refrigerators, washing machines, or other appliances that define modern life in the West. They also fail with larger energy demands such as machinery, agricultural equipment, or water pumps, necessary machines for survival in these regions. As a result, people still rely on generators and fossil fuels to operate this type of machinery.

At night, a house may have only one bulb lit, giving off very limited light. As a result, families still rely on flashlights, candles, or kerosene lanterns to move around, forcing them to buy flashlights and batteries, lanterns and fuel, or else purchase additional solar panels just to recharge their flashlights during the day.

The so-called solar boom is not a green revolution. It is a desperate response to government failure, a stopgap solution that provides the bare minimum rather than a path to prosperity.

On paper, the solar numbers in the developing world look impressive. Developing countries now account for more than half of global solar capacity, compared with less than 10 percent a decade ago. In 2017, they even surpassed industrialized nations in renewable energy production, largely due to solar.

Across Africa, more than 1.5 million households now rely on solar home systems, a nearly 300 percent increase since 2015, supported by mobile-money financing. Kenya leads in installations per capita, with some 30,000 small panels sold annually. Bangladesh has rolled out over 5.2 million systems, bringing electricity to nearly 12 percent of its 160 million people. India added a record 9,255 megawatts of solar capacity in 2017, with another 9,600 megawatts under development.

While these numbers may look impressive, scaling solar to sustain modern living standards would be unimaginably expensive, requiring vast resources, land, and infrastructure. Worse, such a build-out could cause more environmental damage than the continued, use of fossil fuels.

The power requirements of modern appliances far exceed what small off-grid systems can deliver: hair dryers need 1,200–1,800 watts, central air conditioners 3,000–3,500 watts per hour, and one ton of cooling capacity requires about 1,200 watts of solar panels. To run a central AC unit efficiently would take around 3 kilowatts of output, roughly thirty 100-watt panels. Meanwhile, the average American home consumed 10,791 kWh of electricity in 2022, demanding about 25–30 panels per house.

In dense suburban neighborhoods, there simply isn’t enough roof space, while ground installations would consume vast tracts of land. Building solar farms on this scale would devastate the environment, casting shadows that kill crops and vegetation, requiring tree removal, and converting natural habitats into industrial solar sites.

Cities in northern latitudes or regions with heavy cloud cover would still face major energy shortfalls. On top of this, manufacturing, installing, maintaining, and replacing billions of panels would create more pollution than fossil-fuel generation ever did.

As an example of scalability, consider the land and infrastructure required. To power New York City with solar would take a system of about 40 gigawatts, covering roughly 200,000 acres, or 312 square miles, an area equal to five Districts of Columbia or 50,000 Walmart stores.

Other estimates put the requirement at 420 square kilometers (103,800 acres) just to meet the city’s 10.5 gigawatt demand. At the national level, powering the entire United States would require between 13.6 million and 22,000 square miles of solar farms, about half the size of Pennsylvania, or the size of Lake Michigan.

But solar panels alone are not enough. A zero-carbon grid with 94 percent renewables by 2050 would require 930 gigawatts of energy storage and 6 terawatt-hours of battery capacity. For context, the average U.S. household uses about 30 kWh per day, while a Tesla Powerwall stores only 14 kWh. Scaling battery storage to national demand would exceed current global production by orders of magnitude.

The environmental cost of manufacturing batteries is staggering. About 77 percent of the world’s lithium-ion batteries are made in China, where coal dominates the energy mix, doubling greenhouse gas emissions compared to cleaner production. Producing one tonne of lithium, enough for about 100 car batteries, consumes 2 million tonnes of water and emits nearly 15 tonnes of CO2. Roughly 40 percent of a battery’s carbon footprint comes from mining and refining nickel, manganese, cobalt, and lithium. To meet projected demand by 2035, some 384 new mines would be needed.

Mining also brings severe human and environmental costs. Cobalt, mostly sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo, is linked to dangerous conditions and human rights abuses. Lithium and rare earth extraction pollute rivers, poison farmland, and in some cases cause radioactive contamination. A Paris Agreement pathway would require lithium demand to grow more than 40-fold by 2040, while demand for cobalt, nickel, and graphite would rise 20–25 times.

In short, replacing developed-world energy consumption with solar would demand land areas comparable to entire states, battery storage on a scale the world cannot produce, and environmental destruction from mining on an unprecedented level.
