As anti-ICE riots escalate in Minneapolis, the activist group Defend 612 has mobilized tens of thousands of supporters through encrypted communication networks to disrupt federal operations. An investigation into the group reveals a complex funding structure linking Defend 612 to liberal foundations, shell entities, politicians, and third-party organizations, some of which ultimately trace back to billionaire George Soros.

Defend 612 is a Minneapolis-based activist group that provides anti-ICE “know your rights” training, organizes and supports protests, and maintains a decentralized rapid-response network designed to interfere with ICE enforcement in real time. Its tactics include sending alerts through encrypted Signal chats, following ICE vehicles, swarming enforcement sites with observers and protesters, and whistle-blowing to warn potential targets.

On its website, Defend 612 claims that since the government launched “Operation Metro Surge” in the Twin Cities, “Somali, Latinx, and immigrant communities have faced relentless harassment, intimidation, abduction, detention, and deportation.” The group’s use of the term “abduction” rather than “arrest” reflects standard activist framing.

While Defend 612 does not argue that those targeted are legally present, it nonetheless seeks to shield illegal aliens from arrest and deportation, opposing the core function of immigration enforcement.

Defend 612 operates under fiscal sponsorship by Cooperation Cannon River (CCR), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Northfield, Minnesota (EIN: 82-0852275). Under this arrangement, CCR handles donations, financial management, and tax-exempt status on Defend 612’s behalf, allowing the group to operate without incorporating independently. Defend 612’s website directs donations to CCR, which describes its mission as supporting “social and environmental justice” initiatives.

In January 2026, watchdog groups including the Center for American Security and Advocacy (CASA) and the Functional Government Initiative filed IRS complaints alleging that Defend 612’s activities may violate CCR’s tax-exempt status by promoting interference with federal agents and encouraging potentially illegal actions.

CCR reported revenue of approximately $249,000 in its most recent IRS Form 990 filing for fiscal year 2024, reflecting significant growth from earlier filings showing net income and net assets of $48,409 in 2020.

CCR’s funding comes primarily from general contributions and foundation grants. Public filings list no program service revenue, significant direct government funding, or investment income, though indirect federal and state funding appears to flow through the broader network.

In December 2023, The Solutions Project awarded $50,000 to CCR through its Fund for Frontline Power, as documented in Cause IQ records and reported by Alpha News. The Solutions Project, co-founded by actor Mark Ruffalo and led by Gloria Walton, supports climate justice organizations, often emphasizing groups led by women of color, immigrants, and Indigenous communities.

The Tides Foundation provided at least $10,000 to CCR. Tides is a donor-advised fund that channels money to liberal causes and has funded similar Minnesota organizations, including Copal MN ($50,000) and Unidos MN. George Soros is linked to CCR through Tides via his Open Society Foundations (OSF), which he has funded with more than $32 billion.

OSF contributed $25.8 million to Tides between 2020 and 2021 and more than $20 million overall, with funds directed toward immigration activism and protest-related causes. Tides-backed efforts have included the 2025 “No Kings” anti-Trump protests, pro-Palestinian campus activism, and Black Lives Matter initiatives. A 2025 Black Lives Matter lawsuit against Tides over $33 million illustrates the scale of funding moving through this channel.

Soros-linked funding extends beyond Tides. The Sixteen Thirty Fund, heavily financed by OSF, gave Unidos MN $150,000 in 2024. Unidos MN also received $400,000 from the Ford Foundation that year, while other major foundations, including MacArthur, support the same immigration-advocacy ecosystem through coordinated grant-making.

Public funds also enter the Defend 612 ecosystem through indirect pass-through channels. MN350, a Minnesota nonprofit that has donated to both CCR and the Defend 612 network, received $100,000 in state tax funding through a Minnesota DNR grant for community forestry and climate resiliency. While Defend 612 does not receive state funding directly, its fiscal sponsor benefits from the resources and grant access of larger national organizations.

These include The Solutions Project, which leverages private donations from figures such as Leonardo DiCaprio to help groups like CCR access federal EPA funding, and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, which manages millions in federal contracts for the Department of State and provides grant-making infrastructure to local partners.

Additional support flows through intermediary organizations such as the Amalgamated Charitable Foundation, which facilitates donations to CCR and Defend 612 projects. Although ACF does not rely on direct government funding, it manages large capital inflows, including more than $26 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and substantial Ford Foundation grants, to support policy advocacy that influences public spending. Together, this structure creates a funding trail in which private wealth and federal grant initiatives move through layers of national foundations and fiscal sponsors before reaching local Minnesota efforts linked to Defend 612.

Links between Defend 612 and prominent politicians appear largely indirect and network-based, operating through overlapping activist ecosystems rather than formal relationships. Defend 612 has been described as part of a broader activist network that includes the Sunrise Movement, a youth-led climate group closely associated with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Sunrise played a role in Ocasio-Cortez’s rise through actions such as the 2018 sit-ins at Nancy Pelosi’s office and collaboration on the Green New Deal in 2019. Conservative outlets, including the Daily Wire and commentator Julie Kelly, claim Sunrise provides organizational or promotional support to Defend 612 as part of a broader anti-ICE ecosystem, though there is no evidence of direct involvement by Ocasio-Cortez.

Sunrise has also received endorsements from figures such as Jane Fonda and Mark Ruffalo, though these celebrity ties are focused on climate activism rather than immigration enforcement disruption.

Department of Homeland security agents had their body cameras on during the confrontation and fatal shooting of leftist armed leftist agitator Alex Pretti.

Per Fox News reporter Bill Melugin: “A DHS spokesperson confirms to Fox News that several federal agents had their body cameras on during the interaction that led to the deadly shooting of Alex Pretti in Minnesota, and footage from “multiple angles” is currently being reviewed by investigators.”

NBC News also confirmed that DHS agents recorded the confrontation and fatal shooting of Pretti.

“Investigators are reviewing body-camera videos from immigration agents in the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed to NBC News,” NBC News reported.

“Homeland Security investigators have videos recorded by cameras worn by multiple agents, department spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said,” the outlet reported.

DHS law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault when an armed man approached Border Patrol officers, the DHS said.

The armed man, identified as 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti from South Minneapolis, appeared to attack federal law enforcement agents before he was fatally shot.

Pretti was armed with a handgun and had two additional full magazines.

Alex Pretti reportedly did not notify law enforcement officers that he was armed.

Slo-motion video posted to social media shows Pretti appearing to grab his firearm as agents shot him.

“The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. More details on the armed struggle are forthcoming,” the DHS said.

“Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject but was pronounced dead at the scene,” DHS said.

“The suspect also had 2 magazines and no ID—this looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement,” the agency added.

New York Times Spins False Narrative on Actions by Alex Pretti Leading Up to His Shooting Death by CBP Officers in Minneapolis
January 26, 2026

The New York Times spun a false narrative on the actions of Alex Pretti leading up to his shooting death by Customs and Border Patrol officers in Minneapolis Saturday during an attempt to arrest an illegal alien.

The Times report falsely paints Pretti as an innocent observer when instead he actively interfered with and made physical contact with a CBP officer while the officer was pushing two aggressive anti-ICE activists out of the street. The narrative skips over or ignores Pretti’s actions to interfere with the CBP officer and his aggressive physical contact with the officer.

According to reports and officials, Pretti, who had been issued a concealed carry permit, was armed with a concealed handgun and two magazines however he did not have the permit or ID on him as required by state law.

New York Times excerpt:

48 seconds before shooting

Videos show a small group of civilians standing in the middle of a street where a person was detained on the ground; the civilians are speaking to federal agents. Mr. Pretti appears to be filming the scene, and he walks closer to the federal agents while holding his phone.

Then an agent shoves two civilians from one side of the street to the other, pushing them toward a white S.U.V.

For a second time, the agent pushes the civilian with the orange backpack. The civilian falls to the ground near the white S.U.V.

28 seconds before

Mr. Pretti tries to put himself between the D.H.S. agent and the two civilians. Footage shows the same agent squirting pepper spray in the direction of Mr. Pretti’s face. (This agent will later fire shots at Mr. Pretti.)

Mr. Pretti is holding his phone in one hand, and he holds his other hand up to shield himself from the spray.

Minutes earlier, but unreported in the Times narrative, Pretti had been pushed out of the street by a CBP officer:

The video posted by Drop Site News (embedding blocked, click link to view) shows the two female anti-ICE activists, wearing a brown coat and white coat, respectively, who would end up being pushed out of the street by a CBP officer, acting as a team approaching CBP officers while Pretti hangs back acting as back-up. All three have their cellphones out for video recording.

Pretti steps out to the middle of the road and directs a car to proceed past the scene of the CBP action.

The CBP officer moves the two women across the street. The woman in the brown coat, in the video below, is seen returning to the woman in the white coat and the officer, and then gets shoved again by the CBP officer toward where Pretti had moved by the parked white car.

Pretti approaches the woman in the brown coat and puts his body between her and the CBP officer. In an act of familiarity the two put their arms around each other’s backs. The woman in the white coat hustles over and approaches the CBP officer and gets shoved again by the officer. Pretti moves in and tries to put himself between the woman and the officer. Pretti makes physical contact with the officer and gets pepper-sprayed by the officer. He then turns to help the woman in the white coat back on her feet as more officers approach and try to detain him and chaos ensues.

The Times effort to set a false narrative paid off with a dramatic reading by Mika Brzezinski on Morning Joe on MSNOW Monday (click link to view, embedding blocked.)

What happened afterward when CBP officers tried to detain Pretti and a scrum ensued leading to Pretti being shot and killed is open to interpretation. It appears Pretti, knowing he had a concealed gun on him, resisted being detained. An officer apparently saw and removed Pretti’s gun from his rear waistband. Speculation is the gun accidentally discharged after being removed, setting off a reaction by other officers to draw their weapons and shoot Pretti several times, killing him.

Whether that is a justified shooting will be determined by federal investigators.

Pretti did all he did Saturday knowing he had a concealed handgun and backup ammo on his person. Normal concealed carry permit owners are usually the most non-violent and law-abiding citizens because they value their hard-earned permit and don’t want to have it revoked.

While the mainstream media breathlessly comes to the defense of those trying to thwart efforts to protect American citizens from violent illegals, they remain largely silent on the victims of illegal crime.

Last week, the legacy media and liberal members of Congress made false claims about a viral case in Minnesota, alleging that ICE targeted a five-year-old child.

In reality, the child was abandoned by his father, an illegal alien, while the father fled arrest.

The story was plastered all over the MSM and pushed by Democrat politicians ad nauseam.

Yet, the legacy media and Democrats have been largely silent when a vulnerable American child is the victim of an illegal.

The Statesboro Herald reported that the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) announced the arrest of  Kenneth Moreno Guzman, 26, on January 15 for allegedly invading a family’s home on January 12th and raping an 11-year-old girl and holding her and her 10-year-old sister at knifepoint.

BCSO Investigator Kodi Wallis, who is leading the investigation, and Capt. Todd Hutchens, who heads the Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigations Division, held a press conference on Friday.

Per The Statesboro Herald:

“Basically, this happened early morning hours of the 12th,” Hutchens said. “He came into this family’s home and forcibly raped this 11-year-old girl at knife-point, and so he was in possession of a knife when this happened… .

Hutchens said agents with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement – ICE – interviewed Guzman and determined he entered the country illegally from Mexico about five years ago.

As a result, Hutchens said “ICE issued a detainer that requires ICE has to be notified prior to Guzman being released from Bulloch County custody. And I will tell you that he will not be released from Bulloch County custody under any circumstances until the case is disposed of in court. So, he will remain in our custody throughout the court proceedings and likely go from our custody to the prison system.”

The Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division announced details of the charges against Guzman on Facebook:

As a result of this investigation, an arrest was made yesterday afternoon. KENNETH MORENO GUZMAN, 26, has been taken into custody and is currently being held without bond at the Bulloch County Jail pending further court proceedings.

Kenneth Moreno Guzman

Criminal Charges:
– Rape
– Statutory Rape
– Aggravated Child Molestation
– Aggravated Sodomy
– Cruelty to Children, 1st Degree
– Aggravated Assault (Knife) – 2 counts
– Home Invasion, 1st Degree
– False Imprisonment
– Burglary
– Possession of a Knife During the Commission of a Crime – 10 counts (one count associated with each of the above offenses)

Guzman remains in custody without bond at the Bulloch County Jail.

Professional team at Arnold & Itkin law firm poses for a group photo in front of their office, showcasing expertise in personal injury and accident cases.

The private jet that crashed during takeoff from Bangor International Airport in Maine on Sunday evening is registered to prominent anti-ICE lawyers who were spending tens of millions of dollars to elect Democrats in the upcoming Texas primaries.

The crash resulted in seven fatalities and one serious injury.

The jet was registered to Arnold & Itkin Trial Lawyers, known for its aggressive litigation and leftist political activism, including substantial financial support for Democrat causes, particularly those opposing strict immigration enforcement and Republican policies in Texas.

The victims’ names have not been released at this time, but early reports indicate that people associated with the firm were on board.

The firm, along with another Houston-based practice, Abraham Watkins, donated $300,000 to the political action committee First Tuesday to boost Democrat candidates in the 2024 elections.

The Texas Voice previously reported:

Two liberal personal injury law firms that have combined to spend over $11 million thus far in the 2026 election cycle – including spending to influence Texas Republican Primary elections – have boasted about their work representing illegal immigrants on their firm websites.

On his website, Kurt Arnold of the Arnold & Itkin law firm brags about obtaining the “largest settlement for an undocumented worker in United States history.”

Arnold and his law partner, Jason Itkin, formed the Texans for Truth and Liberty PAC last year with an initial contribution of $10 million from their law firm. Texans for Truth and Liberty has already spent nearly $1 million, with the bulk of that spending going towards Republican Primary races.

The Truth and Liberty PAC has been funded by Soros-linked interests and has focused on challenging Republican incumbents in tort reform battles.

During the crash, air traffic control can be heard saying, “Aircraft upside down. We have a passenger aircraft upside down,” approximately 45 seconds after the plane took off, according to a PBS report.

First responders were at the scene less than a minute after the air traffic controller’s message.
