New York City officials are looking to hire 1,000 emergency snow shovelers as a major winter storm moves toward the region.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a press conference on Saturday that the city is preparing for what could be its most significant snowfall in nearly a decade.

“For those who want to do more to help their neighbors and earn some extra cash, you too can become an emergency snow shoveler,” Mamdani said.

”Just show up at your local sanitation garage between 8 am and 1 pm tomorrow with your paperwork,” he added.

Workers will be transported by vans and buses beginning Sunday night to clear bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants, and other public areas.

The Department of Sanitation said shovelers are paid $19.14 per hour, with overtime at $28.71 per hour after 40 hours.

However, netizens pointed out that applicants are required to present two forms of identification, despite Mamdani and the Democratic Party’s fervent opposition to Republican-backed voter ID mandates.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for the city from Sunday morning through Monday evening.

Forecasters warn snowfall totals could exceed 20 inches, with the heaviest accumulation expected overnight Sunday into Monday.

The deployment comes after scrutiny following January’s Winter Storm Fern, when reports questioned whether the city had adequate emergency staffing.

The Department of Sanitation disputed those claims, saying operational needs have changed since the last comparable storm nearly a decade ago.

Officials said the incoming storm could surpass January’s system in severity.

Athletes in winter sports compete on ice, showcasing a dramatic fall during a high-speed race, highlighting the intensity and risks of the event.

Kamila Sellier, a speedskater from Poland, suffered a major cut above her left eye from another skater’s blade on Friday during the women’s 1,500-meter race at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Sellier was skating on the short track and lost control, falling behind Santos-Griswold. She was struck above her left eye with Santos-Griswold’s skate blade.

After crashing into the wall, medics had to tend to Sellier as she lay there motionless.

Fox News reports:

Speedskater Kamila Sellier suffered a cut above her left eye after another competitor’s blade struck her during the 1,500 meters on Friday at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

The Polish athlete was on the short track when she fell behind American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold, whose blade caught Sellier near her eye.

Both Santos-Griswold and Sellier slid across the ice and crashed into the wall, but Sellier lay motionless as medics rushed to her side.

“She was eventually immobilized on a stretcher but gave a thumbs-up as she was wheeled away.”

Polish officials said her eye appeared unharmed. She was given stitches at the event and then was taken to the hospital to be treated further.

She also posted a picture of herself on Instagram (with part of her face hidden), writing and thanking people for their support.

“I know that one day i’ll look at this picture and remember that i’m stronger than i ever believed. Thank you for all your words of support, just wanted to let you know that i’m doing quite okay,” Sellier wrote on her Instagram.

Santos-Griswold, the American skater, was given a penalty for an illegal pass, which contributed to the crash.

The Polish team is waiting to hear if there has been any damage to the eye, according to a BBC article.

How difficult it is to go back to the Moon…

The Artemis II Lunar mission suffered another setback, as it is expected to miss the March launch window.

Reuters reported:

“NASA is taking steps to potentially roll back the Artemis II rocket and Orion spacecraft to its Vehicle Assembly Building after observing an interrupted flow of helium, the space agency said on Saturday. ‘This will almost assuredly impact the March launch window’, NASA said.”

Sky News reported:

“On Friday night, however, NASA discovered that the flow of helium – which is required for launch – to the rocket had been interrupted during a key part of the preparation process.

[…] Before the setback, the agency had announced that it was targeting 6 March to launch four astronauts around the moon and back.”

“The Artemis missions are part of NASA’s long-term plans to build a space station – called Lunar Gateway – where astronauts will be able to live and work and prepare for missions to Mars.

[…] When the 10-day mission is able to go ahead, it will see the crew testing life support, navigation, and communication systems to confirm everything operates as it should in deep space.”

Trump DOJ Axes NY Immigration Judge Who Rubber-Stamped an Absurd 97 Percent of Asylum Claims

Woman posing by a pond in a park, wearing a burgundy top, with trees and people in the background.

The Trump administration has fired New York immigration Judge Vivienne Gordon-Uruakpa, who boasted the highest asylum approval rate in the state at a staggering 97%.

The 66-year-old judge, known for her soft-on-asylum rulings, was terminated in September without fanfare, as part of a broader purge of lenient judges under Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Gordon-Uruakpa’s ousting came to light after she vanished from the downtown Manhattan courthouse website, where she had presided over cases.

A Justice Department spokesperson confirmed the site is up to date but declined to elaborate on the specific reasons for her firing, though an unnamed government official speaking to the New York Post pointed to her prolific record of granting asylum as the key factor.

Unlike lifetime-appointed federal judges, immigration court judges serve at the pleasure of the Attorney General and can be hired or fired, a power the Trump team is using as another tool to restore order.

Gordon-Uruakpa graduated from Fordham University and Howard University School of Law. Her courtroom became a virtual rubber stamp for asylum seekers, approving claims at a rate far exceeding her colleagues and contributing to the backlog of cases that critics say enabled illegal immigration under previous administrations.

This firing is not an isolated incident.

The Trump administration has axed more than 100 overly permissive immigration judges during his term.

Meanwhile, tougher judges like John Burns, known for denying asylum at high rates, have been promoted. He was named Acting Assistant Chief Judge in January.

The results are undeniable. Deportation rates are soaring, with nearly 80% of migrants seeking asylum being deported in the last quarter, according to Syracuse University’s TRAC program.

Illegal border crossings have also plummeted under Trump’s renewed enforcement policies.
