Media outlets across the country lit up in mid-April with the same jaw-dropping headline: California’s top Democratic contender for governor had just been forced out of the race over explosive sexual misconduct accusations.

In a matter of hours, Rep. Eric Swalwell lost every major endorsement, watched his campaign collapse, and was effectively tossed into the political dumpster.

On the surface it looked like another MeToo reckoning in a party that loves to lecture the rest of us about women’s rights. But scratch the surface, and the real story is far uglier – a textbook case of Blue double standards.

California’s 2026 gubernatorial race was already shaping up as a nightmare for Democrats.

Golden State voters are fed up with years of progressive experiments that delivered sky-high taxes, rampant homelessness, and a cost-of-living crisis that’s driving families out.

For the first time since Arnold Schwarzenegger left office in 2011, Republicans have a genuine shot at flipping the state red.

Recent polls told the tale. Conservative TV host Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco were trading the top spots with support in the 14-17 percent range.

Democrats were scattered behind them, with Swalwell – until the scandal hit – polling as the strongest in the fragmented Blue field.

Don’t forget California’s peculiar “jungle” primary system. All candidates run on one ballot in June. The top two vote-getters – regardless of party – advance to November.

That means the general election could feature two Republicans, two Democrats, or one of each. With the Democratic vote split among a half-dozen hopefuls, the math was already terrifying for the party of Gavin Newsom. A strong Republican showing could lock them out entirely.

Then came the bombshell. In the first week of April, detailed allegations of sexual assault and misconduct poured out – including claims from a former staffer who said Swalwell assaulted her in a New York hotel room.

More women came forward with stories of inappropriate messages, unwanted advances, and worse. Within days Swalwell suspended his gubernatorial bid and later resigned from Congress.

Democratic leaders raced to distance themselves. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called for him to drop out. Nancy Pelosi said the allegations should be handled “outside of a gubernatorial campaign.”

Labor unions and Sen. Adam Schiff yanked their endorsements almost overnight. The party that brags it’s the champion of #MeToo suddenly discovered its moral compass – right when the cameras were rolling.

Here’s where the hypocrisy stings. Swalwell wasn’t some fringe backbencher; he was a high-profile Trump critic and reliable foot soldier in the fight against MAGA America.

Democrats had promoted him, fundraised for him, and positioned him as a future star – until the public found out. The speed of the cancellation wasn’t about principle.

It was about damage control. Sexual misconduct was apparently tolerable behind closed doors when it stayed inside the Blue tent. The moment it became a national story, Swalwell became radioactive.

Democratic strategists wasted no time seeing the silver lining. Swalwell’s support – concentrated among certain Democratic voters – can now be redirected to whichever Blue candidate emerges strongest.

That consolidation could be the difference between a two-Republican November ballot and one that still gives Democrats a fighting chance. In a fragmented field, his sudden exit might have been the best thing to happen to the party’s long-term math.

Whether the timing was pure coincidence or a calculated storm remains an open question. What isn’t open to debate is the double standard.

The same Democrats who spent years preaching zero tolerance for misconduct were perfectly comfortable carrying water for one of their own – until the voters could see it. California’s jungle primary just got a whole lot more interesting, and the Blue wall is showing fresh cracks.

If the people of the Golden State are truly tired of the hypocrisy and the failed policies that come with it, November could finally deliver the red reset they’ve been waiting for.

For the last few says, Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona has looked like a hot mess. He has been doing interviews in what almost appears to be a state of panic as he tries desperately to distance himself from his friend Eric Swalwell.

Now he has an even bigger reason to sweat.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida appeared on CBS News tonight and implied that another bomb is about to drop in the Swalwell scandal and it’s aimed directly at Gallego. She also said that she has already referred the matter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida accused Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego of misconduct on Thursday, which Gallego denied.

Luna told CBS News’ “The Takeout with Major Garrett” that the Arizona Democrat was the previously unnamed senator whom she said was facing “very disturbing” allegations in a cryptic social media post earlier this week…

CBS News has not verified the allegations.

Luna did not give much detail about the allegations, but she said some of them are “sexual in nature” and some of them involve alleged campaign finance violations. She also said Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s office confirmed to her that the matter is under investigation.

Luna referred to Gallego as a senator “that was very closely tied to Eric Swalwell,” a House Democrat who resigned from Congress this week following sexual misconduct allegations.

Luna said “there is a woman that allegedly is coming forward with attorneys [and] wants to go on-record about an incident that occurred between the two of them at the same time, and the event was sexual in nature, allegedly.”

Last night on his show, Greg Gutfeld devoted his opening monologue to the downfall of Eric Swalwell and it was a rant for the ages.

At one point, Greg even made a funny comparison between Swalwell and the serial killer Ted Bundy.

For the most part, Greg just delighted in the fact that Swalwell turned out to be a typical virtue signaling liberal guy who pretends to be an ally to women but is really a creep.

Greg Gutfeld didn’t just roast Eric Swalwell on Wednesday night’s “Gutfeld” — he delivered a full autopsy. The Fox News host used Swalwell’s resignation from Congress, following multiple accusations of sexual misconduct and rape, as an opportunity to dissect not just the man but the entire Democratic machine that kept him alive for so long…

“He’s no evil mastermind, possessing neither the strategic qualities of a Pelosi or the sociopathic charm of Gavin, or even the well-manicured stubble of Rashida Tlaib.” At his core, Gutfeld said, Swalwell was just a buffoon — loud, arrogant, and, apparently, fragrant. “He was hiding in plain sight, ’cause if you ever met him at a party, you’d run screaming. He was loud, arrogant, even smelling, an assault on all our senses.”

Of course, being a buffoon didn’t disqualify him. It made him useful. Gutfeld described Swalwell as a “low-level henchman, told what to say, no matter how absurd, and he would.” The Democrats, Gutfeld argued, tolerate anyone willing to do the dirty work. “Everyone tolerates him for now, ’cause he’ll do anything for the syndicate.” The keyword there is now, because the moment a useful idiot stops being useful, the machine moves on…

“It’s like watching Ted Bundy in a commercial for an all-girls college,” he said. “He’s the classic male feminist who rattles off the popular positions while moving into position to grab a t*t. It’s a progressive pig pass.” Gutfeld named the pattern: Ted Kennedy, Harvey Weinstein, Swalwell. “It’s like a hall of fame, but the plaques are restraining orders.”

One thing that everyone seems to agree on is that the Swalwell scandal was one of those ‘open secrets; in Washington that everyone knew about but no one mentioned in polite company. If you’re a Democrat, people will do that as long as you are helpful to the cause.

One of the things everyone is trying to figure out now is exactly who knew what and when. Democrat politicians are denying it across the board but now there is a media wrinkle in the story.

According to at least one Democrat operative, the liberal outlet Politico had the goods on Swalwell back in 2019 but they dropped the story when he ended his presidential campaign.

David Strom of Hot Air did some research on this person making the claims:

I had never heard of Trujillo, although, frankly, the number of political strategists’ names that just trip off the tongue of anybody outside of the machinery of politics is rather small. So small that people like James Carville, who hit his sell-by date sometime around 1990, are still going on the air. Throw in Axelrod, Roger Stone, and a few others, and you are pretty much done with the list.

But I checked him out, and at least CNN and a few other major media outlets think he is legit, having worked on Democratic campaigns in California for years and even consulting with presidential campaigns there. He also seems to be associated with a lobbying firm that features him as a talking head and Democratic influencer of note.

So the story is probably legitimate.

Would anyone really be surprised? This is what Democrats and the media do. They cover for their people until they become a political liability.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is definitely running for president in 2028, but he has a lot to answer for in terms of how he has governed and the shape his state is in right now.

Conservative writer and political analyst Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist appeared on the Ingraham Angle tonight and pointed out that even though Newsom’s record is a disaster, he has two distinct advantages.

First, the liberal media will cover for him. They will actively campaign for him by downplaying the negatives and hyping anything they see as a positive.

Second, he is a shameless liar. Hemingway said that he lies with the ease of a psychopath, and she’s right.

LAURA INGRAHAM, FOX NEWS: And I think if California were run well, Mollie, Newsom should be a shoo-in. I mean, it’s a massive state with a giant economy, one of the largest economies in the world of any countries in the world. But of course, the record in California is a nightmare, he’s a nightmare, and so I don’t see how that’s going to fly at all.

MOLLIE HEMINGWAY, THE FEDERALIST: Well, Laura, the thing that he has to his advantage, that Gavin Newsom has to his advantage is even though he has a horrible track record of governing California, he still has the large institutional media willing to lie about that track record. And that is a serious advantage that most Democrats have. And Gavin Newsom, you know, I actually find Hunter Biden, for all of his problems with the law and corruption, to be kind of an interesting pundit about the Democrat Party.

And he does identify Gavin Newsom as what he thinks is their strongest candidate. Well, there is this thing that Gavin Newsom has where he stands apart even from most politicians who have trouble telling the truth. Gavin Newsom is almost a sociopath in how willing he is to lie from moment to moment about anything in order to gain advantage.

I think that’s actually a strength in politics. It’s not a good thing, nobody should emulate this, but it might help him in a crowded Democrat primary.

Establishment media can’t get away with nearly as much as they used to.
