For more than 125 years, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne (also known as the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor) have cared  for the poor and terminally ill, particularly those with cancer.

Rosary Hill Home, which ministers to the most vulnerable in society, is a 42-bed, licensed hospice and skilled nursing facility in Hawthorne, New York. The sisters do not take insurance, government funds, or payments from patients or families.  The care is free to those who need it.

But radical New York Governor Kathy Hochul and her administration want to put woke ideology above caring for those in need, forcing the Sisters to sue.

At issue is the LGBTQ Long-Term Care Facility Residents’ Bill of Rights (codified in Public Health Law § 2803-c-2) and enacted in 2024. The law applies to nursing homes and long-term care facilities, including religious ones, and requires facilities to:

• Assign rooms based on a resident’s self-identified gender identity (not biological sex), even if a roommate objects.
• Allow residents to use bathrooms and facilities consistent with their gender identity.
• Use residents’ preferred names and pronouns (including when the resident is not present).
• Provide “cultural competency training” on gender identity and diverse sexual orientations/expressions.
• Permit consensual sexual relationships among residents without restriction based on the facility’s moral or religious views.

The state Department of Health has sent warning letters to facilities, including Rosary Hill Home, about potential violations, such as segregating rooms or bathrooms by biological sex or failing to use preferred pronouns.

Failure to comply could garner fines of up to $2,000 for a first offense, $5,000 for subsequent ones, or $10,000 for willful violations. Further punitive action could include loss of license, injunctions, or even jail time for repeated willful violations.

The Sisters are suing Hochul, saying the law forces them to choose between their faith and their mission.

“We are consecrated religious Sisters and have one mission,” Mother Marie Edward, O.P., told Fox News Digital in a statement. “It is to provide comfort and skilled care to persons dying of cancer who cannot afford nursing care. We do not take insurance or government funds or money from our patients or families. The care is totally free.”

“We are supported by the goodness of our benefactors,” she continued. “We do this without discriminating on the basis of race, religion, or sex. We do it because Jesus taught us that, when the least among us are sick, we should care for them, as if they were Christ himself.”

Edward told Fox News Digital that “New York’s gender ideology mandates not only violate our Catholic values, they threaten our existence with fines, injunctions, license revocation, and even jail time. This is why we were forced to go to court to seek protection of our religious exercise and freedom of speech so that we can continue our ministry to the poor.”

New York Requires Nuns Serving Dying Cancer Patients to Use Gender Ideology

For over 125 years, the Dominican Sisters located in Hawthorne,New York have provided comfort and nursing care for patients who are poor and suffering from incurable cancer. But if they do not comply with the State’s transgender mandate, the sisters face fines, court orders, potential loss of licensing, and jail time.

The New York State Department of Health sent the first in a series of “Dear Administrator”letters to the Hawthorne Dominicans’ 42-bed facility Rosary Hill Home on March 18, 2024. These letters listed the state’s demands and were accompanied by a
training curriculum requiring the sisters to align patient care and the training of their sisters and employees with the State’s gender ideology.

Mother Marie Edward, General Superior of the Hawthorne Dominicans, said that the first reaction was disappointment. “We Sisters have taken care of patients from all walks of life, ideologies, and faiths. We treat each patient with dignity and Christian charity. We have never had complaints. We cannot implement New York’s mandate without violating our Catholic faith,” she explained.

The New York gender ideology mandate requires Rosary Hill Home and other long-term care facilities to house biological men in women’s rooms even over the opposition of a female roommate, to permit residents and their visitors of one sex to access bathrooms set aside for those of the opposite sex, to use false pronouns, to use language and “create communities” affirming patients’ sexual preferences, and to accommodate patients desire for extramarital sexual relations. Long-term care facilities are also required to ensure that their staff members are trained in “cultural competency” informed by the State’s gender ideology.

The Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne and Rosary Hill Home are members of the Catholic Benefits Association (CBA). They have, through legal counsel provided to them by the CBA, asked the New York State Department of Health for an exemption from these mandates because they infringe upon their Catholic values, burden their exercise of religion, and compromise their free speech rights.

After waiting two weeks and not receiving a response from the State to their exemption request, the Hawthorne Dominicans filed a lawsuit on April 6, 2026, in federal court to protect their religious freedom and their ministry to the sick poor.

Martin Nussbaum of the First & Fourteenth law firm and counsel for the Sisters, said,“this was especially disappointing because New York’s law provides religious exemption for long-term care facilities affiliated with the Christian Science Church but not for similar Catholic facilities. The Sisters were left with no choice but to file suit in federal court, and the Catholic Benefits Association has helped them do that.”

Sister Stella Mary, O.P., Administrator of Rosary Hill Home commented, “our foundress, Mother Alphonsa Hawthorne, charged us to serve those who are ‘to pass from one life to another’ and to ‘make them as comfortable and happy as if their own people had kept them and put them into the very best bedroom.’ We intend to continue honoring this sacred obligation but need relief from the Court to do so.”

President Donald Trump has taken decisive action in the escalating standoff with Iran, ordering the U.S. Navy to immediately begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical oil chokepoints in the world.

The decisive move comes after the radical Iranian terror regime once again defied America’s clear nuclear demands and refused to fully comply with ceasefire terms following devastating U.S. strikes that have already crippled their military capabilities.

President Trump made the announcement via Truth Social on Sunday:

“So, there you have it, the meeting went well, most points were agreed to, but the only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not.

Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.

At some point, we will reach an “ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT” basis, but Iran has not allowed that to happen by merely saying, “There may be a mine out there somewhere,” that nobody knows about but them.

THIS IS WORLD EXTORTION, and Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted. I have also instructed our Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran. No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.

We will also begin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits. Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL! Iran knows, better than anyone, how to END this situation which has already devastated their Country.

Their Navy is gone, their Air Force is gone, their Anti Aircraft and Radar are useless, Khamenei, and most of their “Leaders,” are dead, all because of their Nuclear ambition.

Vice President JD Vance and U.S. negotiators spent over 21 hours in talks with Iranian officials before walking away without a deal.

“We’ve been at it now for 21 hours, and we’ve had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranians. That’s the good news,” Vance said. “The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement. And I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America.”

The vice president added, “So we go back to the United States having not come to an agreement.”

Vance, who led the U.S. delegation alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, made it clear that the U.S. laid out its non-negotiable positions on Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missiles, support for terrorist proxies, and full compliance regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

“We’ve made very clear what our red lines are, what things we’re willing to accommodate them on, and what things we’re not willing to accommodate them on, and we’ve made that as clear as we possibly could,” Vance said. “Iran may have chosen not to accept our terms.”

In a follow-up Truth Social statement, President Trump ripped into the Iranian regime for a deliberate betrayal of its promise to reopen the Strait of Hormuz:

“Iran promised to open the Strait of Hormuz, and they knowingly failed to do so. This caused anxiety, dislocation, and pain to many people and Countries throughout the World.

They say they put mines in the water, even though all of their Navy, and most of their “mine droppers,” have been completely blown up.

They may have done so, but what ship owner would want to take the chance? There is great dishonor and permanent harm to the reputation of Iran, and what’s left of their “Leaders,” but we are beyond all of that.

As they promised, they better begin the process of getting this INTERNATIONAL WATERWAY OPEN AND FAST! Every Law in the book is being violated by them.

I have been fully debriefed by Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, on the meeting that took place in Islamabad through the kind and very competent leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan.

They are very extraordinary men, and continuously thank me for saving 30 to 50 million lives in what would have been a horrendous War with India. I always appreciate hearing that — The amount of Humanity spoken of is incomprehensible.

Mainstream media would have people believe that there is no support for the U.S.-Iran conflict and that the world would not be safer with the IRGC removed from power. However, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told Jake Tapper on CNN that the world is safer because of U.S. military action in Iran.

He added that, under President Trump’s leadership, U.S. strikes have significantly weakened Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, stating, “Degrading these capabilities is really, really very important for your and my safety here in the U.S., in Europe, in the Middle East.”

Across the world, protests in favor of regime change have been taking place, but mainstream media have largely ignored them. The Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University noted in a March 9, 2026, analysis that VOA Persian was accused by its own staff of censoring coverage of Pahlavi. This suggested that President Trump was correct in his characterization of VOA and other government-funded media as having been co-opted by the left and no longer reporting objectively.

Three VOA staff members told The Hill that the adviser overseeing VOA’s Persian-language service, Ali Javanmardi, was excluding video and audio of protesters chanting Pahlavi’s name, silencing guests from discussing Pahlavi, and skewing coverage of Trump’s position toward the crown prince. One staffer said, “This is the kind of censorship that you would expect to see in authoritarian countries run by dictatorships.”

In March 2026, VOA journalist Ahmad Batebi, a prominent Iranian dissident, said he was fired after confronting Javanmardi about censorship. He stated that he was repeatedly told verbally that he was not allowed to include eyewitness statements supporting Pahlavi or pro-Pahlavi slogans in his reports.

Iranian diaspora media outlets, operating outside Iran and broadcasting in Persian, have been among the most consistent voices opposing the Islamic Republic and its security apparatus. Iran International, a London-based network and the most-watched Persian-language satellite channel globally, documented the IRGC’s massacre of thousands of protesters since January 2026.

In response, the regime summoned the families of exiled journalists, threatening them to pressure their family members to stop reporting negatively on the regime.

Tehran’s prosecutor ordered the seizure of assets and bank accounts of Iran International staff, alongside those of other diaspora outlets and protesters. According to Tehran regime state media, the Iranian Attorney General’s Office issued a warning to “those Iranians living abroad who in different ways sympathize, support, or cooperate with the American-Zionist (Israeli) enemy.”

In addition to framing the U.S. conflict as an attack on the Iranian people rather than on the IRGC, mainstream media have downplayed the popular support for former prince Reza Pahlavi, whom many Iranians would like to serve as an interim leader until elections can be held.

On January 9, 2026, when Reza Pahlavi issued a call for protests at a specific hour, millions of Iranians responded simultaneously and on schedule, describing it not as mere popularity but as “a successful act of political command,” marking a qualitative shift in Iran’s political dynamics.

When U.S.-Israeli strikes began on February 28, the network documented Iranians inside the country pleading directly with President Trump for protection, with rooftop chants calling for the death of the IRGC echoing across residential neighborhoods despite armed regime enforcers firing on buildings to silence them.

IranWire, a Washington, D.C.-based investigative outlet founded by Iranian journalists in exile, reported in March 2026 that the prospect of strikes on IRGC infrastructure was welcomed by those inside Iran who had watched the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) massacre their compatriots in January.

Large Iranian diaspora protests have been ongoing in London since January 2026, consistently linked to Pahlavi’s calls to action. Demonstrations on January 11 drew several thousand people, first outside the Iranian embassy and then in front of Downing Street. The February 14 London rally drew 50,000. On April 4, the Jerusalem Post reported coordinated diaspora rallies outside U.S. embassies and consulates in more than 20 countries, spanning at least 34 cities across Europe, Asia, and North America, including Paris, Berlin, Rome, Stockholm, Seoul, Toronto, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. Pahlavi stated: “The message from hundreds of thousands of Iranians around the world is loud and clear: this is a decisive moment for our nation and the struggle for freedom.”

In Washington, D.C., Iranian Americans took to the streets supporting U.S. and Israeli strikes. Women marched with uncovered hair in defiance of Islamic Republic rules, and protesters walked dogs, both banned under the regime. A rally and march from the U.S. Congress toward the White House was held March 29, called for by Pahlavi. In London, counter-protesters facing a pro-regime march told each other “Soon in Tehran” as Iranians and Israelis danced together, with crowds shouting “Go IDF” and “Down with the Islamic Republic.” One journalist noted: “They are mainly pro-Shah, and even though Israel is bombing their country, they feel it’s bombing only the IRGC.”

On March 31, rooftop chants across Iranian residential neighborhoods called for the death of the IRGC and the Basij militia. Footage from Tehran’s Chitgar district showed a plainclothes enforcer pointing a rifle at a residential building as anti-IRGC chants rang from the upper floors, followed by gunfire. The Center for Human Rights in Iran wrote in the Washington Post: “The bombs are still falling, and the Islamic Republic’s future is uncertain, but one thing is already clear: The Iranian regime is preparing for its next war against its own citizens.”

Gratitude toward President Trump has been a recurring theme. Diaspora news media documented Iranians sending him direct appeals for intervention during the January crackdown. France 24 reported on April 9, 2026, that many Iranians who opposed the Islamic Republic had hoped U.S. attacks would lead to regime change and therefore opposed the ceasefire. One Tehran resident stated, “I am personally willing to pay any price, as long as the regime ceases to exist,” while others asked, “Why? Why did they not finish it off?”

Many Iranians described the ceasefire as a betrayal, with one writing directly to President Trump, “We asked you for help to free Iran, but not only did you not free it, you handed us a much worse country and trampled the blood of 45,000 martyrs.” Kako Aliyar, a member of the leadership committee of the Kurdish Iranian opposition party Komala, said there was “no viable alternative” to removing the Islamic regime and that the ceasefire had left the IRGC intact while executions continued.

The Iranian diaspora, including Prince Reza Pahlavi, have called for the U.S. to pursue regime change rather than a deal.

At CPAC on March 28, Pahlavi urged Trump to “stay the course,” telling the crowd: “Do not throw this crumbling regime a lifeline. Pave the way for the Iranian people to finish the job,” adding: “Millions of Iranians have called on me to lead the transition to democracy.” Iranian diaspora supporters carrying Lion and Sun flags filled the audience, chanting “Long live the king.”

Pop star Sabrina Carpenter is facing a woke cancellation mob for her hilarious response to an Arabic “Zaghrouta” chant a fan did during her set at California’s Coachella festival on Saturday.

The fan interrupted her performance with a loud “zaghrouta,” a traditional high-pitched Arabic ululation commonly used in Middle Eastern and North African celebrations.

Sitting at her piano after playing her hit song, “Please Please Please,” Carpenter stopped and addressed the noise directly.

“I think I heard someone yodel. Is that what you’re doing? I don’t like it,” she said, according to footage that has gone viral online.

When the fan fired back that it was “my culture,” Carpenter responded sarcastically, “That’s your culture, yodeling?”

Carpenter continued, “Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird.”

Predictably, the woke crowd lost its mind.

Critics on social media slammed Carpenter for being “rude,” “ignorant,” and even “Islamophobic,” claiming she disrespected the fans’ culture by not happily tolerating the loud disruption at her own concert.

As the mob continued to come after her, Carpenter folded and posted a groveling apology on X.

“My apologies, I didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly,” the singer wrote. “My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. Could have handled it better! Now I know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out.”

Rep. Eric Swalwell has now lost all 21 endorsements from fellow Democrat colleagues in a stunning political collapse that unfolded in less than 24 hours, throwing the California governor’s race into complete chaos.

As The Gateway Pundit has previously reported, Swalwell has been facing a growing wave of serious allegations, including claims of sexual assault and misconduct—allegations he has repeatedly denied.

But despite those denials, the political fallout has been swift, coordinated, and devastating.

The final blow came when Rep. Adelita Grijalva rescinded her endorsement, officially leaving Swalwell with zero support from Democrat members of Congress. Her statement was blunt, calling the allegations “deeply disturbing and disqualifying.”

She was far from alone.

High-profile Democrats, including Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego, joined a wave of House members who withdrew their backing.

Reps. Scott Peters, Linda Sánchez, Jimmy Panetta, and Julia Brownley also pulled their endorsements, signaling a complete collapse of institutional support.

Even more damaging, Rep. Jimmy Gomez resigned from his role as a campaign chair, while multiple California state lawmakers and influential labor unions quickly distanced themselves from the campaign.

Behind the scenes, the situation appears even worse.

Swalwell’s fundraising infrastructure has begun to unravel, with his ActBlue page reportedly taken down and campaign ad buys being pulled. At least one major fundraiser has already been canceled, and reports indicate the campaign is rapidly losing staff. What was once considered a competitive gubernatorial bid is now widely seen as being in free fall.

The legal pressure is also intensifying. Swalwell is reportedly under investigation by the Manhattan district attorney, adding another layer of uncertainty to his political future.

Meanwhile, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has announced plans to force a vote to expel him from Congress, escalating the situation beyond the governor’s race and into his role in Washington.

Swalwell has pushed back, stating in a video message that the allegations are “absolutely false” and insisting that the incidents “did not happen.” However, those denials have done little to slow the rapid erosion of support within his own party.

Party leadership is now openly turning against him. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark, and Democrat Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar issued a joint statement urging Swalwell to immediately end his campaign.

Just days ago, Swalwell was considered one of the frontrunners for the Democrat nomination in California’s gubernatorial race. That reality has now completely changed.

The speed and scale of the collapse raise a broader question: who is next?

Swalwell was the only Democrat in the top three for governor. Chad Bianco, the Republican sheriff of Riverside County, has 14% support from likely voters, including those leaning toward his candidacy.

Steve Hilton, a conservative commentator and Fox News host, also has 14% support, with a smaller share of direct supporters and a larger share of voters leaning in his direction.

Swalwell had the highest level of direct support among Democrats, with 11% backing his campaign and another 1% leaning his way. 

Two other Democrats, former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter and Tom Steyer, have 7% and 11%, respectively. A poll conducted by the same firm a few weeks earlier showed a three-way tie at 10% among the leading Democrats in the race.

If Democrats are to win the race, the only path forward would be consolidating behind a single candidate. Katie Porter, however, has faced her own controversy. As previously reported by The Gateway Pundit, Porter was exposed for an outburst toward a staffer in a re-surfaced video clip.

Tom Steyer remains another option, though many Democrats are hesitant to rally behind him due to his billionaire status. He has also faced criticism from within the party, including accusations related to investments connected to ICE detention facilities.

Swalwell’s sudden political downfall underscores how quickly support can evaporate when allegations reach a critical mass, particularly within a party increasingly sensitive to internal pressure and public perception. 

For Democrats, this moment extends beyond one candidate—it raises questions about the stability of the entire field.

With one of the leading contenders effectively removed from the race, the California governor’s contest is now wide open, and the scramble to fill the vacuum has already begun.

What happens next may shape not just the future of one campaign—but the direction of the Democrat Party in one of the most important states in the country.
