NYPD Reports Hate Crimes Rise Under Mamdani-More Than Half Committed Against Jews

While New York City Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch recently bragged about a drop in crime in the Big Apple in a press release, the statement buried a rise in hate crimes that are overwhelmingly committed against the city’s Jewish community under radical NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

While Jewish New Yorkers make up only 10% of the city’s population, more than half of the confirmed hate crimes were anti-Jewish with hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers increasing by 8.5% so far this year.

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force (HCTF) investigates allegations of hate crimes and bias-motivated incidents. After an incident is flagged as a possible hate crime, the HCTF investigates and determines, in consultation with the NYPD Legal Bureau, whether it constitutes a hate crime under New York State law. If an incident is deemed a hate crime under the law, it will be categorized as a confirmed hate crime. The NYPD provides data on confirmed hate crimes along with all reported hate crimes regardless of whether they are ultimately confirmed as hate crimes by the HCTF. The disclosure of both sets of numbers enhances transparency and reflects best practices in connection with hate crime reporting.

Year to date, the number of confirmed hate crimes increased 9.4% (360 vs. 329), with 31 more confirmed hate crime incidents compared to last year. In July, there were 33 confirmed hate crimes and 50 incidents reported as hate crimes. More than half of the confirmed hate crimes for the first seven months of the year, or 56.9%, were anti-Jewish hate crimes, despite Jewish New Yorkers making up only 10% of the city’s population. During the first seven months of the year, anti-Jewish hate crimes increased 8.5% (205 vs. 189).

In July, Raul Morales, 51, allegedly stabbed two men in broad daylight near Central Park. One of the victims was Moshe Yezhak Grunhaus, a 50-year-old Jewish man wearing a kippah, who was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver just after leaving Tisha B’Av services at The Jewish Center synagogue.

Witnesses and the victims reported Morales shouting “Allahu Akbar” and “Justice for Islam” during the attacks.

In May, a 23-year-old Orthodox Jewish nurse was attacked on a northbound C train near Canal Street. The suspect, Diana Smith, ranted about Jews “stealing wealth,” then targeted the victim, screaming “Jews are eating kids!” and “I smell the kids.”

She choked the victim twice, kicked her, threw her to the floor, punched her, and ripped out a clump of her hair. The victim suffered a concussion.

Additional attacks, including two synagogues in Eastern Queens that were defaced with feces and motor oil and multiple cases of swastika graffiti on synagogues, Jewish areas, and a kosher business,

Mamdani’s anti-Jewish posture and rhetoric have not helped.

During his campaign, he expoused pride in his membership of the Democrat Socialists of America and has openly supported the antisemitic Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.

He openly campaigned at a mosque alongside Imam Siraj Wahhaj, an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

In a June 2025 interview on The Bulwark podcast, when asked if the genocidal phrase “globalize the intifada” made him uncomfortable, he declined to condemn it. Instead, he argued that it reflects “a desperate desire for equality and equal rights” for Palestinians.

Mamdani was given a public opportunity to decry the phrase with Kristen Welker on NBC’s Meet the Press, but he refused.

The Gateway Pundit reported that Mamdani was the first mayor in over 60 years to skip the city’s annual Israel Day Parade, despite attending other events that celebrate the city’s diverse cultural landscape.

His first veto in office jettisoned a bipartisan bill aimed at combatting antizemitism.

The bill, Intro 175-B, would have required the NYPD to create and publicize plans for protest-free security perimeters (buffer zones) around schools and educational institutions during protests.

It was part of the New York City Council’s Five-Point Action Plan to Combat Antisemitism, introduced after multiple incidents of antisemitic protests near Jewish schools, yeshivas, and institutions, especially following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks.

His wife, Rama Duwaji, publicly celebrated the radical terrorist actions of Hamas when they attacked civilians on October 7, 2023.

Duwaji, a Syrian-American artist, liked Instagram posts just hours after the murderous attacks that celebrated the attacks and expressed anti-Israel rhetoric.
