President Trump, Eric Trump, Don Jr., and the Trump Org filed a lawsuit against the IRS for leaking their tax returns.

They are seeking $10 billion in damages.

In September 2023, federal prosecutors charged a former IRS contractor who worked for the agency from 2018 to 2020 with unlawfully obtaining and disseminating the tax details of a high-ranking public official and numerous affluent Americans to media outlets.

According to court documents and an official press release from the Department of Justice, Charles Littlejohn, 38, of Washington, D.C., stole tax return information associated with a high-ranking government official, referred to as Public Official A  – now known as Donald Trump. He then disclosed this information to a news organization identified as News Organization 1 – now known as The New York Times.

Littlejohn reportedly stole IRS information on thousands of wealthy people. The stolen information was then disseminated to two news outlets (New York Times and ProPublica).

“In July and August 2020, Littlejohn separately stole tax return information for thousands of the nation’s wealthiest individuals. Littlejohn was again able to evade IRS detection. In November 2020, Littlejohn disclosed this tax return information to News Organization 2, which published over 50 articles using the stolen data. Littlejohn then obstructed the forthcoming investigation into his conduct by deleting and destroying evidence of his disclosures,” the DOJ previously said.

Littlejohn was only sentenced to five years in prison. Political leaders said he should have been sentenced to 60 years.

“The IRS wrongly allowed a rogue, politically-motivated employee to leak private and confidential information about President Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization to the New York Times, ProPublica and other left-wing news outlets, which was then illegally released to millions of people,” a spokesperson for Trump’s legal team told CNBC.

President Donald Trump, his two eldest sons, and his family business sued the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Treasury Department over alleged leaks of their confidential tax information, court records showed Thursday.

The plaintiffs seek at least $10 billion in damages, according to the lawsuit in Miami federal court.

The civil complaint alleges that the IRS and Treasury failed in their obligation to prevent the leak of those tax records by former IRS employee Charles “Chaz” Littlejohn in 2019 and 2020.

In addition to Trump, the plaintiffs are his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and the Trump Organization, which the sons run.

A spokesman for Trump’s legal team told CNBC in a statement, “The IRS wrongly allowed a rogue, politically-motivated employee to leak private and confidential information about President Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization to the New York Times, ProPublica and other left-wing news outlets, which was then illegally released to millions of people.”

President Trump on Thursday announced that he plans to impose on Canada 50% tariffs on “any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America” and to decertify all aircraft made in Canada. 

“Based on the fact that Canada has wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 Jets, one of the greatest, most technologically advanced airplanes ever made, we are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all Aircraft made in Canada, until such time as Gulfstream, a Great American Company, is fully certified, as it should have been many years ago,” Trump said on Truth Social.

“If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

This comes amid ongoing tensions with Canada as Prime Minister Mark Carney attempts to dismantle US influence over Canada and European countries and usher in a stronger relationship with China.

Carney rebuked the United States while delivering remarks at the World Economic Forum earlier this month. The Canadian Prime Minister further called for an end to the old “rules-based order” of United States supremacy, declaring the US a “hegeimon” that has been “using economic integration as weapons, tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited.”

Trump then threatened Canada with new 100% tariffs if it makes a trade deal with China last weekend.

“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump declared. “China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life.”

Senate Democrats have reportedly struck a deal to avert a partial government shutdown.

Earlier Thursday, the Senate blocked a measure to advance a government funding package in a 45-55 vote ahead of Saturday’s deadline for a shutdown.

Seven Republicans joined the Democrats to block the funding package which includes money for the Department of Homeland Security.

Later Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer agreed to a deal that will give more time to negotiate funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

The vote may come as early as Thursday evening.

NBC News reported:

President Donald Trump and Senate Democrats struck a deal Thursday to avert a prolonged shutdown for most of the federal government, five sources familiar with the agreement said, in an effort to de-escalate a bitter fight over the Department of Homeland Security and ICE that reached a boiling point after the killings of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis.

While funding will temporarily lapse for multiple agencies starting at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, the impact is expected to be minimal since most federal employees don’t work on the weekend.

A Senate vote on the funding agreement could happen as soon as Thursday night. The House, which returns to Washington on Monday, would then need to pass the legislation and send it to Trump’s desk for his signature.

The president urged lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to vote for the bipartisan deal.

Senator Rick Scott said he might force the Senate to vote on the SAVE Act as part of a government funding deal as the shutdown looms.
