Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin did not accept the usual press conference dodge about illegal truckers.

Standing with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy in Detroit on Monday, he was asked, in effect, to treat a small percentage of wrecks as if that settled the argument.

Mullin refused.

“Every single illegal that maims or kills an individual is 100 percent preventable,” he said in a clip posted by DHS and amplified on his own account.

“I’m trying to prevent every one of them,” he said. “Every death at the hands of an illegal is one too many.”

The briefing announced an emergency shutdown of 110 driving schools and action against 160 more, plus a nationwide audit of third-party CDL testers, according to the full press event.

Duffy pointed to cases such as Dalilah Coleman, a five-year-old left with a catastrophic brain injury after a crash involving a driver who should never have had a commercial license.

Officials said Operation Highway Shield has already pulled hundreds of dangerous truckers off the road.

A reporter still reached for the statistics. Foreign-born or illegal drivers, the implication went, are not most of the problem.

That is the move left-wing media makes on almost every immigration crime story.

No serious person claims illegal immigrants commit the majority of American homicides, wrecks, or assaults. Citizens are most of the population. The majority of crime will usually belong to people who belong here.

That observation is not a revelation. It is a strawman.

The real question is simpler: Should anyone die because a person with no right to be in the country was handed the keys to an 80,000-pound rig?

Mullin put it in family terms. Would the reporter accept a “1 percent” chance that his own daughter gets hit?

The Western Journal has already covered the human cost: an illegal trucker in a deadly eight-car crash, a driver whose sentence was cut under California law after killing three, and Florida’s fight with California’s licensing pipeline.

Texas told Gavin Newsom to take notes. Trump has talked about putting veterans in those seats.

None of that depends on illegal truckers being “most” drivers.

It depends on the fact that every one of those deaths was optional. The driver should not have been here. The license should not have been issued. The family should still be whole.

Mullin said if you are here illegally, the Department of Homeland Security will come after you and remove you.

That is not a talking point. It is the job description.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he was blindsided after two Democrats defected and joined the Republicans to force a vote on a resolution condemning Socialism.

In a 210-208 vote, Democrat Reps. Dan Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez joined the Republicans to advance the resolution.

Later Tuesday, the House adopted the resolution in a 220-192-2 vote.

The House on Tuesday adopted a resolution to denounce socialism “in all its forms” in a political messaging exercise ahead of the November elections.

The House adopted the resolution in a 220 to 192 to 2 vote, with eight Democrats voting with all Republicans in favor. Two Democrats voted present.

The Democrats who supported the resolution included Reps. Kathy Castor of Florida, Henry Cuellar of Texas, Don Davis of North Carolina, Jared Golden of Maine, Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, Darren Soto of Florida and Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico. Those who voted present were Reps. Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania and Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire.

GOP leaders scheduled the vote after Democratic primary voters embraced a number of democratic socialist candidates. Republicans connected those wins to their own push to pass President Trump’s signature voting regulations bill, the SAVE America Act. The resolution also reaffirms their support for the legislation that has been stalled for months in the Senate, where it lacks even a simple majority support.

Jeffries flipped out and cracked down on Reps. Golden Marie Gluesenkamp Perez.

“The decision by two of our colleagues to blindside the entire House Democratic Caucus and join with the Republican majority to pass a procedural rule on the brink of failing represents a significant breach of trust. It necessitates a serious response, and we have asked the Committee on Caucus Rules to take this up in short order,” Jeffries said.

Michigan voters, regardless of political party, do NOT want non-citizens voting in their elections.

America’s dirtiest Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and her right hand man, Bureau of Elections Director Jonathan Brater, have done everything within their power to ensure non-citizens are not only placed on Michigan’s voter rolls, but that once they are on the voter rolls, there is no way to discover them.

Last week, on Monday, August 4, hundreds of Michigan residents packed the Michigan Board of Canvassers meeting in Lansing to defend the validity of the Americans for Citizens Only Voting petition which was turned in several months ago with an astounding 709,841 signatures, 59.1% over the threshold of the minimum to make the ballot, which was only 446,198.

ACVM did not sneak this petition in at the last minute. The petitions landed on March 4, 2026 — more than four months before the July 6 filing deadline and eight months before Election Day. The Bureau of Elections sat on those 709,841 signatures for five and a half months. Staff did not release the 1,000-signature sample until July 24. The staff report calling the petition 17 signatures short did not come out until August 17. That is 166 days after the boxes were delivered, and it left the campaign 17 days to fight challenges, chase affidavits, and get in front of the Board of State Canvassers on August 24.

By then the clock was already killing the measure. Ballots have to be locked for the November 3 election. ACVM asked the Michigan Supreme Court to move. When that court sat on the case, the group went to Justice Kavanaugh on August 31 and asked for an order by September 3 — because the Board of State Canvassers meets September 4 to finalize the ballot. Five and a half months of silence, then a two-week scramble to save a proposal that had cleared the first staff count. That is how Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and her fellow Democrat activists keep a citizenship amendment off the ballot without ever taking a vote on the merits.

The Michigan Board of Canvassers was asked to review the signatures pulled from the “random sampling” that the Board of Elections Director Jonathan Brater’s staff deemed unacceptable because, according to the staff members, the signatures on the petition didn’t match the signatures they had on file. Many audience members could be heard remarking that their signatures have changed over the years, suggesting this was a completely unfair practice. The intense scrutiny given to each signature by the amateur signature sleuths was especially difficult to watch, given that only 6 years ago, Michigan’s top election official, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, told her clerks to ignore signature matching when accepting absentee ballots and assume the signature matched.

The attorneys working with ACVM were able to obtain 23 affidavits from the sampling of 1,000 that MI Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s Board of Elections “staff members” rejected, to prove that the signatures they called into question were indeed, valid signatures. The attornies provided 19 affidavits by the 10 am Saturday deadline and an additional 4 more on Saturday (the time of the delivery is unclear).

Here is the moment the Democrat activists sitting on the MI Board of Elections showed their true colors and rejected an affidavit because they claimed although it arrived on Saturday, it didn’t meet the 10 am procedural deadline. This telling conversation, where both Democrats and Jocelyn Benson’s Director of the Board of Elections all agree with the two Republican members that the signature matched, but they weren’t going to accept it, likely gave the Michigan Supreme Court the ability to rule in favor of the petioners. Because the decision that the signature on the affidavit matched the QVF was unanimous, it could only mean one thing—Jocelyn Benson’s “staff members” wrongly rejected the signature in the first place, since that was where they were supposed to be matching the signature.

The MI Board of Canvassers Meeting Was Like A Scene Taken Out of Atlas Shrugged

For almost 5 hours, Michigan citizens watched smug Democrats disregard legitimate signatures on affidavits filed by voters who were accused by the Michigan Board of Elections of not being legitimate. Two Republican and two Democrats sitting on the Michigan Board of Canvassers, who have no expertise whatsoever to analyze and determine whether or not a signature is a match with the voter’s signature, discounted signatures verified by a notary public with shocking arrogance and smugness.

As a reporter who was covering the hearing, it was difficult to watch the serious issue of voters being disenfranchised by a handful of far-left, mostly ACLU lawyers in what appeared to be a well-oiled machine that included Michigan Bureau of Elections Director Jonathan Brater, who appeared passively at the table, but in fact, is the person overseeing the “staff” who rejected the signatures in the first place.

It was received on Saturday, but because it wasn’t received by “the deadline” at 10 am, she and her counterpart, Ms. Gurewitz, rejected the signature verified by a notary.

On August 26, in a post on “X,” the Michigan Republican-led House announced that they would be holding a hearing to investigate the Michigan Board of Elections decision on the American Citizens Voting Michigan petition.

Do Michigan Voters want non-citizens voting in their elections? 

On January 26, 2025, the Remington Group released a survey of Michigan voters, asking them to identify which presidential candidate they voted for in 2026 and to share their opinions on non-citizens voting in elections. While 44% of respondents said they voted for Kamala Harris and only 43% said they voted for President Trump, the survey showed a whopping 87% were in favor of ONLY U.S. citizens voting in Michigan elections. An astounding 73% of respondents said they wanted voters to prove their citizenship before registering to vote.

So, who is really behind the fight to keep non-citizens on Michigan’s voter rolls?

Meet Mark Brewer, former ACLU board member and president of the Detroit chapter. Whenever a radical Democrat idea, individual, or group needs representation, Mark Brewer is there to fight for them, no matter how misguided or, in some cases, downright evil their agenda may be. Brewer is also a former chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.

On Monday, Mark Brewer was in Lansing, Michigan, to argue against the Citizens Only ballot proposal making the November ballot.

Mark Brewer is the lawyer who’s fighting to ensure non-citizens don’t have to prove citizenship to register to vote and US citizens don’t have to show a valid picture identification to vote:

In the 1990s, he sat on the ACLU of Michigan board and was president of the Detroit ACLU chapter.

Meet Mary Ellen Gurewitz, vice-chair of the Michigan Board of Canvassers.

Brewer and Gurewitz are longtime Democratic election-law colleagues. Brewer was an associate, then partner, at Sachs Waldman from 1983 to 1995. Gurewitz also practiced there. That union-side Detroit firm is where their professional relationship started.

Brewer and Gurewitz were Co-counsel on major voting cases

They were principal attorneys together in the 2018 straight-ticket voting case (Common Cause / A. Philip Randolph Institute). Gurewitz put on evidence that Black voters used straight-ticket voting at much higher rates; a judge found the GOP-backed ban had discriminatory intent.

They were also 2020 election lawyers

Their long-standing relationship/friendship may explain Gurewitz’s behavior, as she frequently looked to Brewer during the Michigan Board of Canvassers. She would look at him, and he would nod in agreement after she shot down another signature, verified with an affidavit.

Meet Governor Gretchen Whitmer Appointee to the Michigan Board of Canvassers, Heather Cummings

As the morning dragged on, Gurewitz and her fellow Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed board of canvassers member Heather Cummings, (also a volunteer lawyer for the radical, far left ACLU), continued to pretend to be handwriting experts, it appeared to be clear that the two of them had made up their minds before they ever entered the room that they would ensure there was no chance they would approve of enough signatures to allow the Citizens Only proposal to make it onto the ballot.

After a long day of listening to the two Democrat activists shooting down one signature or another, the count rose to 626 valid signatures in the sample, which left the petition 3 short of the 629 needed.

The board then deadlocked 2–2 and did not certify the petition for the November ballot.

The three ACLU lawyers Mark Brewer, the lawyer representing the opposition to the petition, his former co-counsel Mary Ellen Gurewitz, and Heather Cummings, who all appeared to be working together to strip 700K Michigan voters of their right to demand only citizens vote in Michigan elections Democrats were able to defeat the petition by deadlocking the vote 2-2, with all but 3 signatures confirmed.

All three of the old friends and like-minded ACLU lawyers can be seen having a discussion together about halfway through the meeting.

ACVM did not file in Washington because it likes the travel. It filed because it does not expect a timely ruling from a Michigan Supreme Court that is 6–1 with 6 far-left Democrat justices. Five of those six Democratic justices were put on the court by election or by Gov. Whitmer. The lone Republican is Justice Brian Zahra. Republican Justice Zahra and Democrat Justice Noah Hood are the only two justices who were judges before becoming supreme court justices. With ballots scheduled to be locked down on September 4, sitting on the case in Lansing is the same as killing the petition. That is why the group asked Justice Kavanaugh to act by September 3.

Judge Tony Graf on Tuesday evening ruled that Charlie Kirk assassin Tyler Robinson will stand trial.

Judge Graf rejected objections from Robinson’s attorneys during Tuesday’s preliminary hearing.

Robinson can receive the death penalty, the judge ruled.

Tyler Robinson was back in court on Tuesday as closing arguments got underway in a preliminary hearing nearly one year after he assassinated Charlie Kirk.

Utah prosecutors on Tuesday argued that Tyler Robinson killed Charlie Kirk “because he disagreed with him.”

“He did it by firing a high-powered rifle into a group of thousands who surrounded Charlie Kirk literally on all sides. And he, like any rational person, knew that that would create a great risk of death to all those around Charlie Kirk in the event of any one of a number of likely possibilities,” Deputy Utah County Attorney Ryan McBride said.

Tyler Robinson’s attorney trashed Charlie Kirk in during the preliminary hearing.

“Mr. Kirk spoke hatefully of certain groups of people. He spoke hatefully of people who don’t have traditional norm-conforming gender identities. He spoke hatefully of people who are not strictly heterosexual,” Robinson’s attorney Richard Novak said

“We all know, because we live in the real world, the kinds of things that Mr. Kirk said. Which some people find hateful,” he added.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Robinson was charged with:

– Count 1: Aggravated murder (capital offense)
– Count 2: Felony reckless discharge of a firearm causing bodily injury
– Count 3: Felony obstruction of justice for hiding the firearm
– Count 4: Felony obstruction of justice for discarding the clothing he wore during the shooting
– Count 5: Witness tampering for asking roommate to delete incriminating messages
– Count 6: Witness tampering for demanding trans roommate stay silent, and not speak to police
– Count 7: Commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child

In July, Judge Graf wrapped up a 5-day preliminary hearing by announcing that he won’t make his decision on whether the Charlie Kirk murder case will go to trial until at least September.

During that hearing in July, Utah prosecutors presented evidence alleging Tyler Robinson confessed at least five different times to killing Charlie Kirk.

On Tuesday, Judge Graf finally ruled that Robinson will stand trial and decided that he can receive the death penalty.

On the day of closing arguments in a hearing on whether the alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk will face a charge that could mean the death penalty, reporters described starkly different images of its principal figures.

Erika Kirk, the widow of the conservative activist and organizer, briefly cradled her head in her hands as the judge discussed still images of her husband’s last moments, according to CNN.

Her husband’s accused killer wasn’t nearly as solemn before the proceedings began, according to a local news reporter, though the day could end with him on trial for his life.

Tyler Robinson, the man authorities say gunned Charlie Kirk down on the campus of Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025, was talking to his defense attorneys and “was seen laughing and joking with them before the judge entered the courtroom,” according to Heidi Hutch, an anchor and reporter for KUTV-TV in Salt Lake City.

CNN reported a far tamer version of Robinson’s behavior, noting simply that he “was seen cracking a smile, a departure from his otherwise impassive nature throughout the hearings.”

Fox, meanwhile, described the behavior as somewhere in between.

“Before proceedings began, Robinson spoke with defense attorneys Scott Novak and Staci Visser, and the group was seen smiling,” Fox News reported.

Considering this is a man who is facing a trial that could end in the death penalty, levity of any kind is noteworthy. However, it wouldn’t be the first time Robinson was spotted cutting up in court. He was also seen laughing at his first court appearance in December, as well as when the preliminary hearing began in July.

According to prosecutors, Robinson admitted to his male transgender lover that he fired a high-powered rifle at Charlie Kirk as Kirk spoke on a crowded stage before a campus gathering.

The presence of others in the area of the intended victim of the shooting is a factor that makes the charge “aggravated murder,” the charge that makes a defendant eligible for the death penalty, KSL-TV in Salt Lake City noted in August.

So Judge Tony Graf’s decision after the preliminary hearing about whether Robinson will face trial on “aggravated murder” will be crucial in any potential punishment if he is convicted.

Robinson’s attorney, Staci Visser, used Tuesday’s closing to hammer home the defense case that the circumstances of the shooting did not meet the “aggravated murder” standard.

“She said the alleged shooter did not reload, fire again, point the rifle at anyone else or threaten anyone else, and argued that no one stood behind Kirk when the shot was fired,” according to Fox.

In another post on X, Hutch reported that Graf’s decision could come as soon about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Mountain Daylight Time. (About 7:30 p.m. EDT.)

It’s 12:20 p.m. on the final day of the preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson, and little has been accomplished so far. The judge will decide before end of day if the trial will be bound over in the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Erika Kirk attended the hearing accompanied by her late husband’s parents, according to CNN.

Kirk family friends and associates, including Charlie Kirk’s producer Andrew Kolvett and Kathryn Adams Limbaugh, the widow of the late conservative radio icon Rush Limbaugh, were also in attendance, Hatch reported.

In an X post, Tyler Bowen, chief executive officer of Turning Point USA, the organization Charlie Kirk founded, asked supporters of Erika Kirk outside the courtroom to keep her in their thoughts.
